Hope someone can help me with this.

I've installed X2 but when I actually try to start the game I get a weird message about the video.

I've tried changing the game resolution and using alternative video playback but the same error persists.

Any funny codec packs installed?

Themken: Any funny codec packs installed?
I have the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) installed. On my WinXP machine I have the original disc installation working fine with the codec pack though.
Ah! But reading too much on Egosoft's forums have taught me that codec packs seem to be the most common reason for problems like these BUT you say it is working on your old pc... hmmm.....

Windows version now? If maybe a DirectX problem. I think any DirectX preceding 9.0 do not work just like that on Windows 10. X2: The Threat is DX 8.1. Unfortunately I do not know how to solve that. Did you look at GOG's list of solutions? https://www.gog.com/support/x2_the_threat

Thanks. I have DX11 on my machine so I doubt it's an "Old DX version" issue. I checked the GOG support site and it doesn't really list any problems/solutions and the community issues don't seem to be related to X2.

I was actually playing without AMD/ATi drivers (was using the default windows ones) and thought that might be the case so I installed the AMD drivers and still got the same issue.

I've logged a ticket with GoG and will see what happens. I guess in the meantime I'll try the following in the meantime:
1.) Try starting the game in compatibility mode
2.) Failing that, reinstall the game using my physical discs
You would think DX11 would contain all of the earlier ones, would you not? Sadly, this is NOT so. I hope you get it running.
Well, none of the options I did worked...

Waiting right now on Egosoft's own reply before I break down and just reinstall the disc versions.

Well, just to let people know I've fixed the issue. It was basically 2-fold:

Issue 1: Direct X version
1.) Installed the June 2010 DirectX Runtime SDK
2.) Run the dxsetup from the installed files
3.) Run the DirectX Web Installer

The above steps solve the startup issue.

Issue 2: Audio corruption
In my case, I started experiencing audio codec issues which was related to an old version of the Combined Community Codec Pack (specifically certain codecs which don't work with X2).

I uninstalled CCCP and re-installed the latest version of CCCP (which does not include the offending audio codec).

X2 now starts fine for me with absolutely no issues.

Hope this helps anyone who has similar issues.

Good you got it working :-)
See how illogical that having DX11 or such does not automatically mean you have the latest version of DX9...

Enjoy X
