Greetings.

I'd like to know which of them have the most casual battles and is best for sandbox play where I focus on doing my thing like for example trading and building my ship/stuff.

Thanks.

Casual? Hmm, I would recommend Freelancer then, which is not an X game at all but among the X games I think Terran Conflict or maybe Rebirth, the latter which is not on GOG (yet).

The X series is not really casual as everything takes a long time to do.

Freelancer is very plot driven. Whilst you can go around trading and upgrading your ship (even buying a new ship), it still very much pushes the plot forwards.

I just started X: Beyond the Frontier (the very first in the X series) and after the initial story intro I've been left out in space with very little information, free to do what I want to do. There is a plotline to X: BtF but you can take your time about it, or not even bother to go for it and just focus on the trading, upgrades and building. I don't think you can replace your ship in the first game, though.

I've not played the other X games (as I've only just started in the X universe).
It depends on what you want... Albion Prelude would be a better choice because of the possibility to make a lot of money at the stock exchange (building stuff is expensive), but there's a war going on which makes this game a lot more dangerous for your ships and stations (your AI pilots are stupid and get killed too fast). On the upside you can make a lot of money with the war too: Just wait until a battle is over and collect rockets and other stuff to sell it ;) Another downside is that Albion Prelude doesn't have many plots. It's almost exclusively sandbox play.

X3TC is a bit more relaxed (no war, just the occasional Xenon/Khaak/Pirate attack) and the plot missions are great time fillers if you're not sure what to do next. And they give great rewards, like the Xperimental, a unique and awesome ship (one of the best player ships). Sandbox stuff is almost identical to Albion Prelude. The huge downside: You'll have to earn your money the hard way. No stock exchange as infinite money source. There's an exploit to sell a shitload of Nividium (a very expensive mineral that no one buys in huge quantities) at once, but... Even this involves a bit of work (and feels like cheating).

X3: Reunion, X2: The Threat and X: Beyond the Frontier... Well... Don't play them if you don't care for the story. X3TC/AP are the best (most advanced) games for sandbox gameplay.
Well, there is a way to earn a s***load of credits in TC, and Reunion, if it was possible to trade wares at stations back then as well (don't remember right now). If one builds huge complexes, the ai tends to use insane amounts of wares for these deals, given they can exist in the sector's station cargo spaces. Today I saw an exchange for more than 5 million energy cell's for just one unit of another ware. Your ship has to have sufficient cargo space for that, though. Which needs some modding in the first place. xD

Thanks all for your tips.

Yeah I've been wanting to try Freelancer for years. Missed it when it was new and I don't want to buy a used copy. I wish GOG would sell it.

Albion Prelude? I have to check that game. The only Albion game I remember is the RPG one.

Bought a used copy on eBay a while ago, personally I don't get why this game gets so much praise for, the presentation is very good I have to give credit to that, but the gameplay is rather meh and can't hold a candle to Privateer IMO, trading is discouraging because doing missions is far more profitable and the combat isn't that great either, it's the Diablo equivalent of spacecombat.

Because I got bored with Elite: Dangerous I got playing X:BtF (again), bought it here with the sale though I owned it on cdrom since forever. I suggest to look up some starterguides on the internet because the manual is pretty sparse, like I didn't know you could set up factories in the first game, I always thought that was only in the later ones.
All in all I'm having a good time with this game at the moment. However it really focusses on economy because combat is laughably bad in this one, even worse than Freelancer if you can believe it.

You probably already have done this but if you haven't check out I-War 2 as well, it's pretty good, and has the best shipcustomization I've ever seen and also the combat is very rewarding.

Albion Prelude is an X3 game. Comes with the X3: Terran War pack.

Maybe I haven't missed much with Freelancer then?

I-War 2 have been on my list for ages. Maybe someday I'll even get to it. :/

Freelancer certainly is worth a playthrough if it was only to experience the story, which is pretty well told like most Wing Commander derivatives but that's about the only thing it has going for it.

I do recommend you play I-War 2, it can be a bit buggy nowadays though. This game is all about being a spacepirate and has no trading (unless you play a mod), you can only trade goods for equipement or convert goods into equipement, but the pirating itself is a lot of fun if you get past the learningcurve.
+2348792 for Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos (aka I-War 2) <3 But it is a very different game.
Blah I'm not very interested in story with this genre. I-War 2 bumped up on my game list. :)
