Anybody else get this? How do I remedy it? Tried a few thing I found in other forums, but nothing has worked. This is my first game from GOG and I'm pretty disappointed. Honestly doubt I'll come back.

I got this too. I assume you're using Win7? If you are, just try running it as an Adminstrator.
I'm also under Win7. I tried the Windows XP Comaptibilty mode.

Now the games starts, but after one game the Win7 Interface is corrupt. You get a Black desktop with ~16 colors.
+1 to wondering how to fix this fully, I should be Admin access already

Edit:Tried running via right clicking and "Run as Administrator" Game worked, but had the problems, as well as causing Chrome to crash

Yes, I fixed this by setting compatibility mode to win 98 and also run as admin, it's probably overkill but it solves the problem.

If the graphics are going wrong you can fix it by killing process explorer.exe via the task manager, it'll kill the start button and task bar so after you finish playing use task manger to start a new task explorer.exe and everything will be back to normal. If you play a lot you can put this into a batch file so it'll kill explorer run the game then restart explorer again once you finish playing.

TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe
worms2.exe
explorer.exe

I'm having the same problem...
I thought it was fully windows 7 compatible...
On my first attempt I had to force my pc to shut down since iI could no longer do anything on it :(
Works fine for me with windows 7/8 but I had to set the game as an admin in the compatibility options, and had to update video card drivers ...
You'll have this error if the files *.dat in the folder Data (in your Worms 2 installation path) are not writable by the user launching the game.
The better (and cleanier) way to avoid this is to install the game in a folder in which the user has writing rights. On Windows >= Vista, it does mean outside of "Program Files".

This workaround was a perfect fix. Thanks
