Wolfenstein has never been allowed to be sold in Germany. This isn't really newsflash..

Oh be assured, I know the stupid law in my neighbour country very well, but I didn't think that GOG wouldn't allow customers to buy the game here. It has been sold in Germany actually, but in a really embarassingly censored and altered version (you have to fight against a certain Heinrich Höller and his "Sect of the Wolves" instead of Heinrich Himmler and the SS Paranormal Division... ).

Ever since the launch of the German storefront (Commandos). High quality technical implementation too, game pages 404 for German IPs.
it's banned under german law due to it's nazi symbolism specifically https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strafgesetzbuch_section_86a
The relevant excerpt of the German criminal code reads:[1][2][3]

§ 86 StGB Dissemination of Means of Propaganda of Unconstitutional Organizations

(1) Whoever domestically disseminates or produces, stocks, imports or exports or makes publicly accessible through data storage media for dissemination domestically or abroad, means of propaganda:

1. of a party which has been declared to be unconstitutional by the Federal Constitutional Court or a party or organization, as to which it has been determined, no longer subject to appeal, that it is a substitute organization of such a party;

[…]

4. means of propaganda, the contents of which are intended to further the aims of a former National Socialist organization,

shall be punished with imprisonment for not more than three years or a fine. […]

(3) Subsection (1) shall not be applicable if the means of propaganda or the act serves to further civil enlightenment, to avert unconstitutional aims, to promote art or science, research or teaching, reporting about current historical events or similar purposes. […]

§ 86a StGB Use of Symbols of Unconstitutional Organizations

(1) Whoever:

1. domestically distributes or publicly uses, in a meeting or in writings (§ 11 subsection (3)) disseminated by him, symbols of one of the parties or organizations indicated in § 86 subsection (1), nos. 1, 2 and 4; or

2. produces, stocks, imports or exports objects which depict or contain such symbols for distribution or use domestically or abroad, in the manner indicated in number 1,

shall be punished with imprisonment for not more than three years or a fine.

(2) Symbols, within the meaning of subsection (1), shall be, in particular, flags, insignia, uniforms, slogans and forms of greeting. Symbols which are so similar as to be mistaken for those named in sentence 1 shall be deemed to be equivalent thereto.

(3) The exceptions from §86 subsection (3) and (4) apply accordingly.

unless an censored version is made gog is not allowed to sell the game in germany.
But GOG offers the game also in "german" - as far as I know there has never been a uncensored german version. Why don't they at least only sell the german (censored) version to german customers?

Because that version is on the index, as well. This time because of the violence. >_>

Anyway, @jaydee2k, try to find anyone from outside Germany to gift you the games. Post in one of the trading threads and hope for the best. It worked for me. ;)
The game was originally indexed in Germany because displaying swastikas and using material like the Horst Wessel song are only permitted to be displayed in art and education. Hence, the Indian Jones films can be shown in Germany uncut and with swastikas.

HOWEVER, that was ages ago. As of now, video games are classified as art in Germany too, so swastikas can be shown in video games now. All the "censorship" of swastikas in past years is a decision of the publishers, not German courts.

I heard that The New Order was the first Wolfenstein game released in Germany and the first game showing Nazi content to be released in Germany

I was ok with that kind of censorship as they replaced it with a different symbol. I only was not ok that the Language couldn't be chosen to English and EVERYONE was speaking German which kills the atmosphere for me.
This is especially stupid in scenes when they can't understand each other like in the Heroes TV Show when one was speaking Japanese and the other Spanish but in the German version both spoke German. Ridiculous :)
