I've been slowly turning up the gamma, but even cranked up, with kitty night vision and torchlight cast, the crypt is mega-dark.

Am I missing something?

I passed a set of doors I couldn't open on the main floor. Went down and dropped off the broken steps, gave the dwarf his rat pie, and I cannot find anything to pick up (that i can reach) or activate, or anything. Being not able to see is definitely not helping, but if fumbling in the dark is a feature and not a bug...what am I supposed to be doing exactly besides running around and randomly clicking?

You need to use the bauble stick (from the chest near Rethpian) on the crystal to be able to reach it.

Gamma/darkness issues: the crypt is supposed to be dark and torchlight doesn't help much, the illuminate spell helps a bit more. Also changing gamma may need a game restart before the changes actually become active.

Darkness: You could try adding a command line parameter to your shortcut. -LIGHT=16
The number can be lower than 16, and it mostly functions on architecture. Outside can still look gloomy.

Example of where to put the setting and screenshot of the difference below. This is assuming that GOG has included the required patch and that you are in 3D (not software) mode.
