I figured it out. I feel stupid now.

Seems what I was mistaking for a bug is an intentional feature. When you first see the Lava Lord, the game locks up and you have to watch him stomp around for a minute. During this scene you can't open a menu, and the characters say nothing, so I thought the game was frozen. You just have to be patient and wait for the scene to end.

I've slain the Lava Lord now and all's well.

lol yes well you are not the first person to wonder whats going on at that point in the game so don't feel too silly... back to gaming now mate
