I was have problems with cutscenes or films / intros etc.. i always got black screen with sound in background from cutscene. I found dgVooDoo - somthing similar to nGlide. After install dgVooDoo cutscenes are showing.

Tip:
- in the Wizardry 8 folder delete all glide.dll - after this, if you run 3D Setup you got all resolutions in menu with 16 and 32 options. For me i discover OpenGL is the best and fastest - in this mode you dont need dgVooDoo or nGlide, but if you use dgVD in OpenGL cutscenes are showing.

dgVooDoo
http://dege.freeweb.hu
it is good if cutscenes are not showing

settings and tips:
- after install dgVD (dgVooDoo) copy from MS or 3Dfx folder (under dgVooDoo folder) all *.dll files and paste into W8 directory.
- if you want use glide, copy files from 3Dfx, it you want Direct3D, copy files from MS folder
- run 3D Setup (from W8 folder) and choose glide (if you use glide, you have not much options for screen resolutions),direct3D, or OpenGL (options are afected only in to cutscenes)
- run dgVD > click to ADD > select W8 folder
- there is set up for good play cutscenes under OpenGL(in some option cutscenes are slow, it is working for me)

in the General Tab:
- API: Direct3D 11
- Adapter to use: i have intel HD3000 (i have notebook)
- Fullscreen Output: Default
- set Apply

in the Direct X tab:
- Disable and pass.. Direct X - unchecked
- Videocard: dgVooDoo 3D accelerated
- VRAM: 65536 kB
- Resolution: Unforced
- Antialiasing: Off
- Behavior: All options checked
- Miscellaneous: All unchecked (for first start it is good check dgVooDoo watermark, to see if dgVD is working)
- set Apply

I dont have set up for Glide. When i try it, W8 was very slow and i got low unstable FPS and rendering was not correct (i dont have FOG in this mode). Direct X is better, but still unstable FPS. OpenGL is for me the best.

Widescreen
If you want widescreen, there is solution, it working with dgVooDoo

I have to say thanks so much - I couldn't seem to find a fix for my broken cutscenes anywhere else but this worked for me!

I wanted to say thanks so much for this tip! Works perfectly and now my cutscenes work perfectly, and the game also functions really well with good graphical options/resolution. I found your instructions difficult to follow so I thought I'd write my own instructions here (below) for anyone else who is trying to use this solution. FYI, I applied this solution to the Steam version, but it will work for both Steam and GOG versions. Here's the solution:

1. Get dgVooDoo from http://dege.freeweb.hu/. I downloaded the file titled "dgVoodoo v2.53 (released: 11.09.2016)" as this site is difficult to navigate. It's half-way down the page.
2. Unzip the dgVoodoo zip file into a easily accessed folder.
3. Copy all the .dll files to your base Wizardry8 folder. These .dll file (there are probably 6 of them) are in the 3Dfx folder and MS folder, from the zip file you just extracted.
4. Go back to the dgVooDoo folder (that you unzipped) and run dgVoodooSetup.exe.
5. At the top, click "add" and select your "Wizardry 8" folder. Also choose Output API = Direct3D 11 (feature 10.1)
6. At this point simply fill out all the options as given by OP. I'll quote them here:

- Resolution: Unforced
- Antialiasing: Off
- Behavior: All options checked
- Miscellaneous: All unchecked (for first start it is good check dgVooDoo watermark, to see if dgVD is working)
- set Apply
7. Finally in the Wizardry8 directly, run "3DSetup.exe." Choose "DirectX7" and whatever resolution (I chose the highest). Leave sound as default. Apply and close.

8. Also in the Wizardry8 folder, run "nglide_config.exe." Choose your desired settings. Not sure whether this actually has any effect. Apply and close.

9. Bingo! Everything should be running perfectly now. You'll notice a dgVoodoo watermark in the corner: this means it's working correctly. I would suggest turning this off from within dgVoodooSetup.exe, otherwise it will be annoying (just follow steps 4,5 and 6 but untick the watermark option). You can noodle around in some of the resolution settings to try and get a better resolution, widescreen support or different acceleration modes/options. Good luck, but if you break something, you should be able to return it back to this stable foundation.

Maybe typing this out was pointless, but I found the original instructions extremely difficult to follow and perhaps these "instructions for dummies" dot-point dumbed-down steps might help someone if there's another dummy like me trying to play this wonderful game. Good luck on your journey, brave travellers. Comment on here if you have any questions or if you instructions didn't make sense or if it was more confusion than OP's directions. :)
This fix should absolutely be stickied. I havent been able to see any cutscenes in the game. Im going to have to try this out. I just made a post recently when I couldnt find any fixes for the cutscenes. But this absolutely should be stickied by a mod if it fixes known issues with people being able to play the game and see the movie files. Thanks!
Wow, I've been using dgvoodoo for this and other games and totally missed that "add" thing, lol, instead I was copy pasting all the files, exe included, in each game's folder, haha. Thanks.

You need one dgvoodoosetup.exe and multiple copies of the 3 .dlls in each game folder.
For example, I have Black & White, Zanzarah :the hidden portal, Sacred 1 Gold and Wizardry 8 that require dgvoodoo to properly work. That means 12 .dlls and one .exe.
That's what I said I realized, I've been doing it "right" since that post :)

What got the cutscenes working for me on win 11 was running the app in compability mode for windows 7.
Right click the game launcher > properties > compability, there you can specify which window version you want to use.
