I would like to try out the Wizardry series, and probably think Wiz6 is a good starting point...but I am getting very frustrated at the character creation process, which is taking a LOOONG time to get the apparently requisite 18+ bonus points that people say a newbie should have on every character. I already have a good idea of what characters I want, I just find myself constantly rerolling for the magical "bonus", and that to me is absolutely no fun.

Is there an easier way to create characters that have a reasonable bonus?

Try Mad-God's Cosmic Forge Editor. It can patch the roll algorithm to aid in higher rolls. His site appears to be down momentarily but can be found here.

EDIT: Never mind, it appears to be back up.

Is it just me or do lizardmen get way more bonuses for every single class?

Actually, in Wizardry 6 and 7 they have lowest collective starting stats and a -20% penalty to Cold Resistance. In Wizardry 8 they lose the Cold Resistance penalty, but they are given two new penalties: -10 Mental Resistance and -10 Divine Resistance. And in all 3 games, the Lizardmen are the only race to have a penalty to mana regeneration. =(

I'm glad I wasn't about to make a character with one then. What the hell does the manual talk about when it mentions race bonuses for classes then? Maybe I'm misinterpreting it but I thought bigger numbers were better.

Lol, now I'm confused! Maybe I missed something, where does the manual mention race bonuses for classes?

There's a chart for Wiz6 on page 50ish? Somewhere near the end of the pdf that lists race to class in a grid that shows bonuses for male to female. Lizards always seemed to score in the 17s when everyone else would average somewhere around 9.

Oh, I know what you're talking about! That chart actually shows how many bonus points you need to enter a given class as a male/female of each race. You want lower numbers in that chart, because it represents how many bonus points you have to roll in the initial character creation to enter that class.

Well I completely misread that thing. I guess that explains why an unusual amount of number fudging was necessary to create the party.

This is where I facepalm.

Hahaha, yeah. I finally caved in and downloaded that Cosmic Forge mod/cheat program. It changes the character creation algorithm from something like a 1:1200 to a 1:19 chance for the max roll. I really didn't want to cheat, but I could not take another 96 hours in that character creations screen. ;-)

On the bright side at least my characters are fairly diverse.

There I was thinking my Mook valkyrie was a good idea.
If you've got enough bonus points to make an unusual combination work, I'd say stick with it.

I think your Mook Valkyrie is a great idea! The Valkyrie have a lot of class advantages and gain levels fairly quickly. Plus, I've been told that Mooks come in handy in the 8th game. They have race specific dialogue or equipment, I think, like the Elf and Faerie.

As Garran mentions above, I think unusual combinations and/or class diversity will put you at an advantage.

You can play Wizardry 6 well with far less than 18 bonus points per character.Instead of spending time rolling at creation you can spend a little more time fighting during the game. Just make sure they have enough carrying capacity. 16 vitality for better spell regeneration is nice but by no means necessary and the other stats aren't very important.
