So, I spent a bit too long in the Monastery - didn't realize there was enemy level scaling, much less how bad it is.

Now it appears I am stuck as there are very few random mobs that my party has even a sliver of a chance against.

Case in point, in my latest save I am cornered by this fine group of folks:

The only way I can beat them is by dropping the difficulty down from Normal to Novice.

Any advice? I have a feeling that soon even "Novice" will be too much to handle.

Probably start anew and use level suppression, which is basically only leveling your characters when it is truly unavoidable. There will still be character progress with locked leveling, as you will see your levels raising.

There was some anti-level-scaling mod in progress around. If someone could provide more info on that, that also could be of help (and I am also interested in it, I got turned off by Wizardry 8's level-scaling too).
Thanks for the advice!

Btw, how do you "inspect" a monster? Manual said something about right-clicking on them, but that doesn't work...
For next time, do not level past level 5 before leaving the monastery.

Also, remember that some enemies have high HP, but low levels. In those cases, status effects (and later, instant death effects) work really well.
Level scaling has a limit, right? At this point I wonder if I should try to go for broke and grind weaker mobs in Monastery instead. Though just before I left there I was destroyed once by 3 vampire bats...

But hey, my mage just learned Fireball, so that's something at least :)

I do try to do some crowd control with Terror and Sleep, but those don't work well on some enemies.

Getting them to higher level in the monastery will just make Arnika Road worse.

If you have strong CC - Terror and Sleep are among the very best early on - then you can deal with this to some degree, but more levels will just push enemies beyond any hope of applying CC to them.

This isn't such a good idea. If you reach level 6, you start encounter Pestilent Rats, which inflect disease which can cause permanent stat loss for and which you can't yet cure with a spell.

When using status ailments, remember that different enemies have different realm resistances. If one status ailment doesn't work, try one from a different realm. (Freeze Flesh, for instance, works well on Rapax.)
Rather than bothering with not overleveling (which is an annoying way to play), I'd just play on Novice. I didn't feel it got "too hard" eventually, though sometimes you need to reload (bad status change) or visit a different area first.
Well, I managed to make it to Arnika without any more switching to Novice, though it took very many reloads. Hardest fight was against some 220+ HP ant (forget what type) which had 4-5 attacks per round. At lest there were no more groups of 120-150 HP bandits. There were some of 8-11 70-80HP bandits, but Fireball + Terror did wonders :)

My party is currently all lvl 8, with the XP to level up - at what point should it be safe to continue leveling them?

Also, is it possible to inspect enemies (to see their resistances and other stats) during or before combat? The best I have figured out to do is hover over them with the cursor to see their HP.

And how important is it to keep equipment/inventory load below 50%?

Once you've reached Arnika, it is safe to level up as much as you can, as you are past the hardest part of the game. (Just be prepared for disease if you ever return to the Monastery.) The one time I recommend not leveling up is if you need more practice to learn new spells.

To inspect an enemy, right-click on the enemy. This will display some of the enemy's stats. The stats displayed depend on Mythology and relative level. (You don't need to put skill points into Mythology; the skill rises nicely on its own.)

Thanks! But right-clicking on an enemy does nothing - it is just the normal switching between mouselook and mouse interaction mode for me.

Tinker a bit with options. Don't remember exactly which one is responsible for ability to inspect enemies but it's there definitely. Maybe you've got to change how mouse works ingame. Check that mouselook thing on RMB.

Ah, seems like it's CTRL+Right Click.
The Road to Arnika is super brutal. I thought for sure I had borked my party but its been pretty smooth after that.

There are a few other hard parts like when those disease rats appear (never can get rid of the status change) or the secret dungeon or if you go to the military base at the wrong level (super hard wizards there).
