I bloody love these games!

Thank you for getting it to us - I can't imagine it was easy given the IP is owned by some Japanese IP group.
I want to know if this game will allow some sort of playing with less than a full party. I usually like Avernum series because my chars lvl up faster because of that. Is that in game? Other than that, I am looking forward to this game.
You can solo if you want.

There are no issues with creating a less-than-full party.

Aside from the fact that it'll become insanely hard.

Ridiculously hard.

But that's beside the point.

Is there any benefit to it like better exp/faster lvls?

You can play with whatever party size you like. Personally I find the games most enjoyable with parties of 3-4 characters rather than 6. I've also done a party of two through all three games, a Lord and a Ranger. Soloing is even possible for 7+8.

There is one exception, though. Wizardry 6 cannot be soloed. The game engine doesn't allow it. And if you edit your savefile down to one character, as soon as you activate an object (like a fountain) the game becomes stuck in an endless loop. So don't do that.

Yes. XP is divided among the whole party, so with fewer characters you'll level up faster. A 4-man party gains experience 50% faster than a 6-man party, for instance. Smaller parties also require less loot to be effective, and tend to have more money available because they don't need to buy as much stuff.

These games sound fing awesome. Ive been reading up on the stuff in them, looks like some high-quality roleplaying going on here.

1-Is the combat system more like might and magic or is it 1 move per character who fights. I just hope its not like might and magic and more like the quest-1 move/attack equals one round.

2-How do lvls work, is it like fallout and whatnot where you gain skill points and stats like strength never go up or is it more like eschalon where stats and skills go up?

Sorry for the questions, its taking all my patience not to drive home from work at lunch ;)

deathknight1728: snip
1 Each character can perform up to 3 attacks per round (depends on the level of the character)
2 You level up by gaining experience and thus you can increase your stats and skills but also you increase your skills by using them.

You issue orders to each character for what you want them to do that round. Then you hit Start Fighting (or Start Combat, depending) and all of your characters and the enemies do their stuff for that round. You get to watch what happens but can't otherwise intervene until the end of the round. So it's the entire group of enemies and characters for one turn, not one character per turn.

For Wiz 8 there's a weird pseudo-realtime mode, but it's finicky at best. I generally stick to turn-based most of the time, and only switch to realtime to make sure my spells land in the right spot or change melee targets, and then immediately switch back.

In 6+7, when you gain levels you get random stat increases and HP and stamina and mana, and then you receive a bunch of skill points to allocate wherever you see fit. Sometimes you can get a +1 to most or all of your stats, and sometimes you get nothing or +1. Attributes are capped at 18 (but can be pushed to 20 with magic items) and skills are capped at 100. Most skills increase as you use them, though, especially weapon skills, so you still feel dynamic even mid-level.

In 8, you get a fixed (small) number of attribute points and a fixed (moderate) number of skill points... but you can only spend at most 3 points on any one thing per levelup. Your HP/stamina/mana is derived from your stats and not random. Everything goes up to 100, but can go to 125 with magic or items or specialization. Your skills can still go up as you use them, but they go up a LOT slower, and at levelup you can't put points into anything past 75, so your increases from 75-100 only happen through usage, which can take a while.

This depends on which game you're playing. In 6+7, you can get at most two mainhand attacks and two offhand attacks per round, with a max of 4 strikes per attack. Non-combat-oriented classes may not get that many, and it's dependent (more or less) on which class you were when you hit level 20. If you were a Mage until 20 and then switch to Samurai, you won't get the full number of attacks. If you're a Samurai to 20 and then switch to Mage, you WILL get the full number. Two-handed weapons cause you to miss out on your offhand attacks entirely (so they're limited to a max 8 hits per round) but some two-handed weapons like Excaliber, Zatoichi Bo or Elven Bow+Mystic Arrows are totally worth it.

In 8, you can get a max of 3 mainhand attacks and 2 offhand attacks, of up to 3 strikes per attack. This is dependent on class, but has more to do with which class has the most class levels. The same rule for two-handed weapons applies, and again there are a lot of good two-handed swords and polearms out there.

In both cases, how many strikes you get is dependent on your class, your level, and how high your Dexterity and Speed are. In 6+7, Dex gives you more swings per attack and Speed gives you more attacks per round. In 8, it's reversed.

I almost squeed. Almost....

I never played the older games but I had a demo cd that had Wiz 8 on it that still seems to work on my newer system. After giving a good play the other month, I just loved it.

It just Wizzzes
Yes! I've been waiting for this for ages.
Just purchased 6 and 7-is there a reason to play in a order. Im only asking in case one is too archaic/ridiculously hard to get through with combat/whatnot. Ive played party-based games like this (Legacy) and wasn't too hard but every game is different. Legacy was first person/party based rpg with similar graphics so thats really my only comparison between games.

Edit-by the way thanks for all the help you guys gave. Its your speedy and quick/helpful replies that made me feel like Im reading through this on game banshee :)

There's one other caveat for 8: if your solo character is a mook (the race), you'll need to temporarily recruit an NPC to get past one (unavoidable) event, or you get an instant game over.

You can import your party from 6 all the way to 8. There's also an item that you can get in 6 that you can give to someone in 8, if you hold on to it :D. I am avoiding spoilers, in case you wanted you wanted to know.
