In the umpani base, you can start up working for the umpani. At first you get a level 1 clearnce pass and the order to go meet Sgt. Rubble who will send you through the obstacle course.

You can either just click him and talk to him or you can grap you papers and click them on him. Both will get him to let you into the obstacle course but...
Apparently you are NOT supposed to use your papers on him, but just click him and speak to him.

I used my papers and the game progressed apparently without any flaws. I got through the obstacle course, got my first quest and fetched evidence of T´Rang on the planet and got my level 3 clearance and went up to meet Sgt. Rubble at the ranged weapons training course
By then Sgt. Rubble started up his speech from the first time we met and the game crashed.

As far as I can see it's an old known bug, that should be fixed by some patch or other. Perhaps not the official patches.

Anyways, I've a save game I had to start all over because the first time through I met some other umpani at an island and lead him back to his base, while I still only had clearance level 1. This catapulted me to clearance level 5, because apparently it's the clearance level 4 quest to save that umpani. Again this locked up interaction with sgt rubble.

I don't want to start over a 3rd time, because I am at level 16 with my chars. About the same as I was in my first run through and thats way too many hours to waste on starting over and over and over, so I am looking for a way to fix my saved game and my trouble with rubble.
I also got stuck because of this, I only had finished training course, then rescued Umpani from Bayjin, got some higher level pass. When I got back to shooting course inside the mountain, Sgt wasn't there, he simply disappeared from the game and I wasnt able to finish this part of quest.

Maybe devs got confused with so many options you can do and many ways to reach certain stuff.. what a pity.
Thats a known bug of original Wiz8, among others;),
btw i dont think gog would have been able to offer the game for the same price
if these bugs would all have been located and fixed

Anyway, i suppose your game crashes with error message:
MonScript MoveRubble.msf Line 2: Unknown location NP_RUBBLE
In case that is correct, check this thread:
http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?5817-Where-is-Bela-(Major-Spoilers-for-Reforged-1-1)&p=570063&viewfull=1#post570063

pls note that i made a typo in that posting, the obsolete space,
you must save the file as \wizardry8_installdir\data\monsters\scripts\moverubble.msf
Or use the attached archive.

You can remove/delete the scirpt after interaction with Rubble worked as inteded,
you must remove/delete the script before the next playthrough!

Yup tried it, but it didn't work for me, but I found another way. Hexediting Monsters.slf file from /Wizardry 8/data/Monsters

There a text string:

WALKTO NP_RUBBLE

I backed up the Monsters.slf file!
Then I wrote over WALKTO NP_RUBBLE, with hex numbers 13 (seems to be a filler. Some tech person will know :) ) and copied Monsters.slf back in it's place in /Wizardry 8/data/Monsters .
Then I talked to RUBBLE again and he redid the first sentence but didn't crash, then I talked to him again and got to the next part.
Then I saved and restored the original monster s.slf file /monsters and continued the game safely.

I found this fix here:
http://www.zimlab.com/wizardry/samjack/bugs.html

Anywas, thanks for the response and the help. Your solution is much easier. The solution I found should probably not be used unless people have machines that are equally as silly as mine :)
strange, my solution is basically equal to the one from Samurai Jack

The files with .slf extension are SirTech archives,
they can be extracted with the SLFexplorer from the Jagged Alliance community,
or madgods Cosmic Forge Editor for Wizardry 6/7/8 (main menu --> miscellaneous --> rummage W8 file collection)

Contained In data.slf is the file [moverubble.nsf] where you deleted the conflicting line with hex editor,
while my solution outcomments it with an asterrix.

And all appropriate files which are placed into the corresponding folders will automatically override their counterparts in the .slf archieves

However, good to hear that you can proceed with the training
btw no need to waiste the rockest, Rubble wont notice if you shoot the dummies with arrows etc
I'm having a similar issue. While searching for a solution online, I read that I shouldn't have camped and saved while in the firing range. Well, too late.

Now, I can't find Rubble anywhere. I'm supposed to meet him in a different room, but I don't have access to it.

Would this same solution work for me as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
