jsjrodman: This looks pretty good!

I'll have to give it a try to see how it compares to my standby of inkscape.

What are the dependencies? What would it take to port it to OS X? Is the file format fullly documented? (I tend to decide to finish a game 8 years later and pick up my maps where they were).

HiddenAsbestos: Thanks, hope you like it :-)

Dependencies for the Linux version are GTK3 and libpng12.

The internal .GCT file format isn't documented but you can export to a fully documented binary or XML format in the Pro edition (the intention was for that to be used for game development). I like to think that GC will still be around in 8 years though :-)

I have no plans to make an OS X version at this time, but it would be nice to do so one day.
Not even glib and such? That should be a pretty trivial port. If you'll give me source access in exchange for say buying 10 copies of your pro license I'll send you back the diffs. Though I certainly can't promise to stick around to support it. (I don't have the attention span.)

If you're not interested, that's OK. It's still a neat tool! I might even try using it over remote X from my Linux box.

Thanks for the offer, but I cannot accept. If I was doing an OS X port I want to do it right and that would mean having my own mac to develop on (I agree, the initial port wouldn't be very hard) and from there provide support at the same level as Windows / Linux.
I've been using Grid Cartographer for a few weeks now while running through Wizardry VI.

Awesome tool for this genre.

I have Grid Cartographer running on a small laptop left of my keyboard. After a little practice the hotkeys are making mapping pretty efficient. Goes something like this:

Party steps forward in to Tomb.
"insert horrendous old PC speaker noise here"
Enter combat commands and start round.
Start editing map around the square I entered in Tomb.
Round 2....

There are a few things on my wish list for Grid Cartographer, but in general is perfect mapping companion software.

Good job hidden asbestos
Thanks very much. I'm glad you like it!

Btw. Feel free to post any suggestions you have on my forum or directly through my contact page. Now is a very good time to do so as I'm currently in the process of planning the v2 upgrade. New features are more easily added at this stage :-)
Thank you very very much for making Grid Cartographer, HiddenAsbestos. I've finally started the Wiz6 LP I said I would start doing with your program, and with any hope at least one of the dudes at SA that reads it will get it as well because honestly, you've made a FANTASTIC thing.

Is it possible to do a line break in notes? Hitting enter just finishes the entry.

Hi LotusGramarye. Thanks for the support!

Single notes with multiple lines are not possible in v1, however you can press CTRL+ENTER to quickly add another note which I hope is okay.

I have on my todo list to add full multi-line notes at some point after v2 launches. In v2 there are also improvements to the label system such as the ability to left or right align them.
Wow! This is exactly what I've been looking for!

Only thing is, I've been using my iPad for reading manuals and such while playing games, and would love to be able to use this on there and not my smaller android phone. Any chance you may do an iPad version sometime?

Thanks!

Hi vacrmh, I don't have any plans for an iOS version at this time. Sorry this probably isn't what you wanted to hear :-(
This is great, although I really wish that you could leave notes in the free version. :(
I would love to get this, but I can't buy it at the moment, so I'm wondering if it is possible to gift people the software, HiddenAsbestos? If so, then I could offer Steamworld Dig, Gunpoint, and Hammerwatch for it.
Version 3 is now available. Here's the main thread: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/grid_cartographer_v3_released
