It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

Cool tool. I might upgrade to pro, but im not sure yet. Its not because I dont want to support you, but I need to stop spending money on everything I like. ~.~ even 5 bucks is a lot to me now. And I dont know if I will play more old games that requires manual mapping. ._.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that this tool is an amazingly good program and im very thankfull you made it. :)

No worries fella - regardless of which edition you're using I'm pleased you like it! Thanks for the kind words :-)
v1.1.5 has been released. During development of the select/move feature I discovered a possible crash bug so I parked that and released this update right away.

I advised everyone to update here: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/gridcart/

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Dotur: I have to move bigger sections of the map one space to the right but not the whole floor. So it would be great if I could select those parts and move them around. Like icons on the Windows desktop. Perhaps an "Select" mode, to avoid accidental movement.
Hey! grab v1.1.6 and you can maybe repair your map!

I've added a box selection tool (which can be used to mask brushing and delete areas of the map) and clipboard functions for Pro users. Also check out the move tool which works pretty much the same as Photoshop.

v1.1.7 has been released at the usual spot: http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/gridcart/

I had an idea last night about how to reduce the number of clicks when switching back and forth between game and mapping. To solve this I've added a new option in Grid Cartographer called 'Auto-Raise Window' (it's in the view menu and on be default). What this does is bring the Grid Cartographer window to the foreground when you move the mouse over it. This stops you having to ALT-TAB or click to activate the window - which is an extra click too many if you're just drawing a couple of walls.

This was only half a solution though since when you wanted to go back to the game you had to make an click there too. So to solve this I've updated my custom dosbox build to add a new option 'autoraise'. In order to use this:

1. Simply backup your old DosBox installation and copy this new one in it's place.
2. Locate the .conf file that the game uses ( eg. dosboxWizardry6.conf )
3. Scroll down and find the line that starts autolock= and make sure it says autolock=false.
3a. Make sure also that fullscreen= is set to false too, but that's assumed.
4. Below that add the line autoraise=true

Start the game and the mouse cursor won't be locked to the game, but will still work for clicking the UI, movement controls etc.
Start Grid Cartographer and arrange the two windows on either side of the screen.

You should now be able to move the mouse over the game or the map and have either become active automatically!
Awesome, thank you!
With that it was quick and easy to move the wrong parts.

Sometimes I think the game wants you to mess up...

because it does, the wizardry games(especially the older Andrew Greenberg ones/1-5) often have little traps that purposely screw with your ability to map with the floor, teleporter traps, spinners, dark zones and the like. The latter ones 6,7,8 have less of these little tricks
v1.2.0 released! http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/gridcart/

This update marks the first step towards a better user experience. The main feature is a new toolbar running down the left hand side. You can use this to select wall or door mode as the primary left-click action for edges, as well as many other useful functions.

I should point out this does not add any faster ways of accessing the door or ground types. That's the next priority - this toolbar was important groundwork that needed to be done and essential to ensure the program is friendly to new users.

Closer and closer to the Etrian mapper! And that is awesome.
Hi,
since 1.2.2 the space-button doesn't work anymore in keyboard mode, is that supposed to be or is it somehow related to the (great) space-menu in mouse mode?

Oh, sorry about that. I took it out and then forgot to put it back in. Stand by!

edit: Try that!

Unbelievable!
I report a bug, go brush my teeth, come back and it's fixed. ^^
Thank you and good night.

KadeGoldha: Another potentially useful feature would be to color code the "travel" tiles (stairs etc.). For example I'm mapping the Mountains/Mines area in Wizardry 6, and there are multiple stairs up and down to the same area. Right now it's easy enough to add a note as needed (very nice by the way) but if I could change the color of each up/down pair of stairs that'd be really cool.
Hope you like v1.2.3 - I've added a color palette so you can paint stair pairs now, also switch or pressure-plate / door combos, etc. All edges and floors can be colored independently so you can really go to town on marking forest areas in green or marking secret walls with a special colour. The possibilities are pretty huge :-)

Awesome, awesome, and more awesome. :) Your utility is a must have in my book! Thanks again!
If anyone is using Grid Cartographer and wants to make online guides or 'let's plays' with it then you'll want to check out v1.2.5pro. I've added exporting of map floors to image files.
