never used dos box before so this might just be me being stupid but after i click the wing commander shortcut and dos box pops up it just seems to stay at expanded memory detected and nothing else happens.
I have the exact same problem.

Neither Wing Command 1 or Wing Command 2 runs.

So, thanks for nothing, GOG.

I would truly appreciate if someone would offer an explanation or a working game.
ASAP.

edit:

Win7 64bit, 8 GB RAM, Geforce 560
Ok, when clicked the mouse button i was able to start Wing Commander 1.
Why is this necessary?
No other game before demanded from me to click through a "welcom to dos box" screen, which appears as if it crashed the game.

I have the same problem. WC1 started, but also has far worse sound than i remember. I should have read more carefully before i bought this, setting it up in a DosBox i could have done myself, i expected this was really made to work good on new PCs... :/
I have the same problem with Windows 7. Right click in the .exe file, properties e check "open as adminstrator" or something like this. Still took some time but open faster now. I dont know if was the properties or the windows was scanning something in the file and that takes time.

Putting it in Windows SP3 Compatability mode made it work for me on my Win 7 64 bit machine.

Compatibility mode doesn't work for me. Tried all the modes. Neither does Admin. Stuck at memory message...

hmm, both games work fine for me using Win7 x64. Did you try changing the video mode?
Try running as administrator*, that has fixed all my dos box problems personally.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit

*right click on the program icon>properties>compatibility>check run as administrator>apply
I'm having the same problem. I get to detect expanded memory and it locks.

I guess you really can't go back to Camelot....
Same problem here. Tried admin and SP3. Also windows 7..

Run the programs as administrator and they should work ok. Either right click the icon and select 'run as administrator' or set ti in compatability mode. Hope this helps.

Try this solution (works for me, even though i despise GOG for releasing this game not running properly and with BAD sound, while advertising it as "runs under Win7 64bit):

Don't use the game shortcut on you desktop.
instead
press the windows key on your keyboard
open the GOG.com folder (under programms)
open the wing commander 1 and 2 folder
open the wing commander folder
start the graphic mode setup program
when the program has started, click on the "Start game button"
when the Dos-Box windows appears, press the ESC key or press a mouse button
The game should start now (at least it does on my computer).

BUT THE SOUND & MUSIC is rotten bad.

I'm really angry about GOG.

If they had this in mind when they released this lousy refurbished game, they have succeed.
I will now think twice before i buy the next game from GOG.

After beeing a bit disappointed with it beeing released just inside Dosbox i did try if this version would do well on my iPhone 4. I would say it is playable! If i could just get the accelerometer to work as joystick it would beat at least 99% of all other games in the appstore (hint: gog see if you your contract allows you to also sell it via the appstore with the iOS port of Dosbox).

I made videos for those of you who are interested:

Wing Commander 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6wMHD0LCxI
Wing Commander 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7L18NcwzrKM
I'm having the same problem and also running win7 64 bit. It won't auto launch or let me type in any command prompts. I hope they fix this soon, there goes 6 bucks down the drain. Could of reserved a game at gamestop. lol
