Well, this is absolutely needed (the CD version), and I'll point the reasons why (this all applies to the DVD version) :

- No DOSBOX = no widescreen support (only for the movies). You don't get to "stretch" the screen to the sides when using modern HD Tv's/monitors

- No windowed mode: Whatever the reason, you can't play windowed mode on this version. I know I mentioned fullscreen above, but the reason for windowed mode is...

- No Xpadder support: Xpadder needs to be "active" to work. Minimized to the taskbar and system tray SIMPLY doesn't work, and since you can't alt+TAB out of the game since windowed is a negative.

- No subtitles in the movies: And even if you want the HQ movies (without subtitles), you can add them to the "DOS" (CD) version (I guess...).

Anyway, you guys at GOG MUST FIX THIS!

You can adjust your video card's GPU scaling setting to get a stretched output ([url=http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Graphics_card#GPU_scaling]details here[/url]).

Are you running Xpadder as an administrator? Any game that is run as an administrator (shows a User Account Control prompt on launch) will also need Xpadder running as admin otherwise it can't interact with it.

Thanks. That's something I missed out. But I won't re-install the game just to test it. Maybe will test it with WC3 first...

Edit: No dice. As I use a profile for Origin games, I don't create a new profile for every single game. I use those numbers bellow to assign a different game, and everytime xpadder is minimized to the system tray or taskbar, it goes back to the number 1 pre-config (hope I've made myself clear).

And second, there's no way to use the joystick simply as a keyboard emulator (DOSBOX allows that, if you configure "joysticktype=none". The usefulness in this is that if you're using an Xbox 360 controller, for example, you can assign buttons individually. If the joystick is activated (and not a keyboard emulator), if you, for example assing the "lock target" (L key) to the "A" button on the X360 gamepad, it will lock the ship, but also fire the guns, as with the joy activated, the fire button will always be the "A" button on the gamepad.

Phew! Again, absolutely NO ARGUMENTS for the CD version not to be an optional for this game.

Meh DVD version is sucks.I can't work this in vista.

The DVD version used to be the 'holy grail' for me personally to get the absolute best video and audio quality, but having the CD version at least as an alternative would be welcomed (I never was able to get the DVD version to play correctly on my PC, haven't tried the GOG release).

I ended up ripping the .VOB files off the game DVD and put them into my PS3 to play on my home theatre (nowadays you can just stream them to any video player), then played the CD version of the game on my laptop (breakdown of what the play order of the video files can be found here - http://www.wcnews.com/articles/art26.shtml).

I can't get the DVD version to work either.

And those of us with OSX and Linux are SOL with the DVD version. It just doesn't run in wine. We need the Dos version.

+1 CD version will be great, not only it's less problematic but also DOSBox can run on portable devices.

I have owned the 6 piece CD-ROM Dos version in the 90s and it works great under Linux
using the dosbox, I have bought the Wing Commander Series at GOG,

I have now finished installing:

- Wing Commander 1+2 (Works under PlayOnLinux / Wine and I'm using dosbox, too)
- Wing Commander III ( Crashes during installation with PlayOnLinux Script but works under dosbox fine)
- Prophecy (works fine under PlayOnLinux / Wine)
- Privateer 2 (Installing with PlayOnLinux !yes!, but gameplay only under dosbox)

What Did not:
- Wing Commander 3 under PlayOnLinux / Wine crashes during installation no exe or bat was created,
need work around to play under dosbox
- Wing Commander 4 ( Yes, installing with PlayOnLinux worked but game crashes before 1st video sequence,
I]ve tested different wine versions and 95-Mode, nothing worked for me only using my 6- cdrom version)

I will now install the rest of the games and I think if they will not work under PlayOnLinux the will work 100% under dosbox!

Maybe sometimes I have a bit trouble with my graphic card I'm using in this computer an ATI Radeon HD 4890
some games work better with a NVIDIA.

Why are you running dosgames in wine? Dosbox runs natively in linux WC1, 2, and 3 are all dosgames or are you talking about the kilrathi saga version? (Win95)

I'd like the CD version, too. For my setup, the DVD version does not run.

Im fine with them adding the CD Versions for people who want them. But i probably wouldn't bother with them. I mean swapping CD's was a minor annoyances in the 90's. But now a days if i can avoid doing it. I usually do.

Well, take wc3 for example. Yes the game came on 4 cd's originally, but on digital releases, you never actually have to swap out a cd. Dosbox is just as happy reading cd images off the hard drive. (which gog also combined to one file, but that doesn't matter much)
