i have the same problem. i tried everything in the thread but no dice. installing those two program worked when i install from my dvd or cds. but not on the download
GOG had a lot of work to do in order to stitch the DVD version of this game together.

For those that remember, this version of the game came bundled with a creative DVD drive and decoder card and was made to run with the card. Lots of work arounds had to be made when computers were strong enough to play DVD's without the decoder cards, but the code of Wing IV still relied on the card hardware.

Hopefully they are able to work out the bugs, the better video and audio quality from the DVD movies are worth more than worth it.

Oh, I'm certainly not angry with GOG. On the contrary. I commend their efforts and certainly understand if some extra time is needed to iron out the wrinkles.
Is anyone else having a problem with sound? When I load the game, I get a silent promo about Dolby (ironic!) and then the Origin logo/credits roll, again silently. Then the dialogue in the opening scene is mute, but when I click on one of the choices ("Straighten him out" or "Help him out"), I hear Mark Hamill say "Straighten him out" or "Help him out". Any help for this?
Finally manged to get this little gem working and completed it in a very long session that has left me addicted and sleep deprived! Good work Gog!
-----------------
Uninstalled and Deleted any traces of WC4 from the Registry
Disable All Firewall and AV Protection
Downloaded a Fresh WC4 From Gog
Installed WC4 with no Protection OR Internet Connection
Disabled Firewall/AV Protection for 10 minutes & Launched the Game in 98 compatibility mode.

This seemed to be the only thing that worked for me as I tried all that was suggested,
Hope this may be helpful to someone in the future, it seems a bit Over the top to have to do every little step but it's working regardless.

A small thing to note may be that the Videos can chop and jump around from time to time.

I have tried all of the suggested fixes and nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 7 system with the latest Nvidia drivers. I have a message into GOG but no reply yet. I would guess there is a lot of bugs yet to be worked out.

Not working for me!
I've tried everything and nothing worked.

The only way to resolve the black screen/error problem was to install the K lite codec pack
http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Mega-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10794603.html

and associate .vob files with it.

Everything works since then.
i have a different problem now. i get a eplorer.exe message cannt read memory

Klite doesn't work for me at all. neither does CCCP or any of the others!
Everyone, please try checking Disable Desktop Composition in the compatibility tab in right-click - properties.

This was checked by default.
I was consulting with someone on WCNews and it turns out that Threatfire was conflicting with or blocking the program. I had suspended it before but that did nothing. I uninstalled it and replaced it with another firewall program and the game is running smoothly. I would suggest that anyone who's running Threatfire do the same if you've been having problems.

my locks up the moment i try and skip the intro movie, and i have sound problems with the intro movie aswell
Lets address a number of issues here:

If you have no sound in the cinematics: Install AC3filter
If you get no video install a DVD codec: Klite or cccp or mpeg2filter should do though some people have had varying success with some over others.

If your game doesnt run at all from the get-go, then make sure you either remove or disable your firewall and/or antivirus software the first time you run the game. Some people running ThreatFire have had to remove the program completely to get it to run

These steps *should* cover 98% of issues with this game. If you still have issues, some people have had varying degrees of success from also tweaking some of the compatability settings (switching to win95 or xp) and turning desktop composition on or off...
