Every time I try to run WC4 downloaded from GOG, I get the "Virtual Protect Failed" error message.

Desktop running Windows 7 64Bit
Intel Core i7
8 GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5700

I've tried changing the compatibility mode to Windows 95/98. Tried turning off the Avast Anti-Virus scanner. Updated the ATI drivers. Turned off the Windows Firewall. Nothing works, any suggestions? Thanks

Did you make sure that you had a Mpeg2 and AC3 decoder installed?
I had the same error on my laptop, dunno why.
Try a reinstall the game in admin mode and make sure you use the right installer.

I uninstalled the game, and re-installed as administrator. No change, same error message. I'm using the installer that I downloaded from gog, so that shouldn't be an issue.

"Did you make sure that you had a Mpeg2 and AC3 decoder installed?"

I installed both the Mpeg and ac3 decoder. I can actually watch the movie files, by going to the wc4 directory directly and watch them. They play perfectly fine, sound and all. But the game itself just refuses to run. Same old Virtual Protect Failed error. I do appreciate the help, any other suggestions?

Can you double check your compatability modes for me? Have you tried XP as well as win95/98? What about turning off compatability modes all together?
I am also having this same file protect failed issue. I am using a Vista 64 system.

I have tried all compatibility modes, from Windows 95 all the way to Vista, all resulting in the same error. I have also tried turning off compatibility mode. I still get the Virtual Protect Failed error.

Did you installed that into the default "\Program Files (x86)" folder?
You might want to try somewhere else, like "C:\Games" or something...
For me following works on win7 x32 and x64 :

1. installed ac3 filters ( http://ac3filter.net/ ) ( that was just for video problems, had nothing to do with virtual protect I guess )

2. Compatibility settings are win95 + visual designs deactivated + desktop stuff deactivated + run as administrator

== Perfect Video + Sound + Game :)

Well that is exactly what I have done, but I still get the Virtual Protect Error. I'm starting to think my compatibility mode just isn't working. Thinking about wiping and reinstalling Windows 7. I'm not really wanting to go there just yet. :)

Only if you can't fix the virtual protect error any other way, try this fix please and let me know what happens: http://www.si-gamer.net/gulikoza/bin/WC4DVDFix.zip

Thanks for the patch. Mine works now except the very begining has no sound. But that's just the very beginning with the 1st 2 or 3 Mark Hammill scenes, but now it runs at least.

Do any of the cinematics have sound for you? If not then you probably have to install AC3filter.
What finally worked for me is running as an administrator. Using Windows 7 64 bit. Installed k-lite codec pack. And no compatibility mode, only disabled the Aero stuff.
