You've read my post?!
If one decides to use abandonware or warez (the latter i don't), he's aware that it's not hassle-free. You'll need cracks, or some online-registration-workaround, you don't get regular updated like on steam etc.
If i pay for something, and still have to fix some config or else it will not work properly, i'm PO.
And i'm even more by GOG's attitude; since they haven't fixed it before releasing, it shows their poor care about the classic games community. If you want to wow a friend about how great dos games are, would you leave him with a WC installation like this one? "Hey, sound ain't working (and the scans are s****y as well), but hey, enjoy. Ask someone else to fix it!"
If GOG is really dedicated about our passion, they should do better. That's my point.

This fix takes a couple minutes. You make it sound like you have to rip the game apart. GOG is a small group of people who got together to re-release old PC games. Dealing with mountains of paperwork and phone calls and all that other shit that comes with signing a publisher shows dedication, no?

herecomethe2000: not sure why you would want cpu to be 386_slow. Set it on auto at least also set core to dynamic or auto, both are far better.
As to why they didn't ship it with a munt version. Simple answer they can't. But you can do what you like in that department. It's not hard to setup, just a bit of reading.
Maybe it's me, but slowing down my CPU in DOSBox solved an issue where the display turned into a mess of flashing lines during the first training mission. Thanks again for the help, btw!As to why they didn't ship it with a munt version. Simple answer they can't. But you can do what you like in that department. It's a simple fix unless your system won't let you edit files in your program files folder. I've tried getting rid of "read only" a few times and it won't work.

Copy the file to the desktop, untick "read only", edit the file and save it, then copy it back to the original location I would generally recommend to install games not in the Program Files folder, if you are using Vista or 7, instead install them into an extra folder like C:\Games\
Thus you can edit files in that folder without all the hassle about administrator rights and all that stuff... :)

I found that changing the mouse sensitivity in the dosbox config file to 500 worked for my sluggish mouse.
Physhal: Wing Commander on GOG seems to have significantly worse sound effects and music than I remember. My guess is that it hasn't been preconfigured to use Sound Blaster. Anyone know how to fix this?
Also the mouse controls are very sticky and sluggish. Changing mouse sensitivity via the graphic mode setup has no effect. WC2 does not have either of these issues.

I too hope that the GOG team will be able to release a patch that will fix all sorts of errors mentioned here and not yet mentioned here. I wouldn't call myself the slowest troubleshooter, but it still took me 10-15 minutes to discover I had to edit the wingcomdr.cfg and "run as administrator" because it would freeze at startup after it says "expanded memory detected." I understand the latter is mentioned in the common troubleshooting tips on this site, but why should anyone have to do this much reading up after an install? I also bought Privateer and Caesar 3 and I do not have any issues like this.
Other bugs with this game include: 1) a buzz or pitched hum, usually following some sort of sound change/action like a wingman communication, 2) sounds cutting out completely and getting music only, 3) extremely slow when there's lots of objects, such as one of the Brimstone missions where I'm fighting 4 Salthi in an asteroid field, 4) random crashes, such as if I'm being rammed while my wingman communicates with me, and 5) if I mouse click too much at the loadup screen to go to the main menu quicker, it seems to lock so wherever I scroll it thinks I'm left clicking. So far the only way to undo/reset it is to right+left click repeatedly til it stops. (I have Win7 64bit)
I want to conclude by saying despite these issues, it's really nice to be playing these games again. I know there's a WC fanbase that probably played them just weeks ago, but for me, it's been 10+ years and I am grateful.

Nope, just reinstalled, file contains "v a904" and it's still midi. Tried using "v a552" and "v a905, still not right.

I'm honestly still not sure what the #'s are but it sounds like the file is being ignored either way. Midi data should only be sent if there is an "r" there, as that is wingcommander's midi mode (Roland Midi not General Midi mind you, hence the weird SFX and instruments when played through your OS)
Where is the wingcmdr.cfg file of yours located?

In the WC directory, have tried two different install locations: Where is the wingcmdr.cfg file of yours located?
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Wing Commander 1 and 2\WC\
E:\Apps\GOG.com\Wing Commander 1 and 2\WC\
