Filben: Hey guys! Privateer 2 was an instabuy because it was one of my very fist PC games I've ever played

The slowdown problem with big/lots of ships and planets seems to occur to everyone using DOSbox. Fortunately the Win95 "deluxe" version runs fine and even with better cutscenes!

Here I figured out how to apply this on the GOG release, it is pretty simple though:

1. Install your awesome GOG version (if not already done)
2. download this file http://originalthp.solsector.net/privateer2win95/priv2windowspatch.zip (source: http://originalthp.solsector.net/privateer2win95/)
3. extract that archive in your Privateer 2 GOG install folder
4. launch the install.exe in your folder (probably you'll get a strange colored screen but you should be able to the see and click the install button)
5. click install (you can move the created directory freely after that; check NOTE 1 for paths reference)

IF the installer tells you have not enough disk space on C:\DARK simply create a folder called DARK on c:\ and hit "install.exe" again. Now it should be working.

6. start playing by clicking dark.exe within the new directory!

In case your game runs too fast you could try this one: http://www.wcnews.com/wcpedia/Deluxe_Edition_Speed_Fix
I don't need it.

NOTE 1: Your GOG install folder act like the CD. Look at the DARK.CFG in your new DARK folder. There are the paths.
NOTE 2: It's possible that there are some slight sound creaking during gameplay. It seems to be a little unsteady since sometimes it occurs and sometimes it doesn't. You can try launching the launch settings shortcut in the GOG folder and set the MIDI and digital audio driver to Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible. Maybe you have to fiddle around a bit with these settings, IF it works at all. But it seems to improve the sound quality for me.

If this little guide works for you let me and the others know for verification!
Worked for me no sweat =) Thanks heaps!
For the record: I installed Gog installer to C:/GoG games.
Copied the windows patch into the install directory and overwrote all files (I made a backup of dark.exe just in case).
Set the new dark.exe and the patch install.exe to run as administrator under properties -> compatibility.
Created a new blank folder in C:\DARK then ran the install file copied from the patch. Installed again using the install.exe. Ran dark.exe from the new c:\dark.

No glitches or speed interruptions. Video quality like I remember it. Currently smuggling weapons to Karaktakus.
this hint works well on xp

thank you! :D

ASNZern: 'Install' crashed after about 65% installed.
Win8 x64 here. Manually created DARK dir on c:/
I'm sorry you got troubles. Unfortunately I do not run Windows 8 so I cannot try this routine in such environment

To those with crashes like "The memory could not be written":
I had such error one time during hitting ALT+O in space to get into the options menu. It occurs just one single time but I'll try to track down and reproduce that error in order to solve it.

If anyone got this very problem and is able to solve it: please share!

Okay, so i tried everything to get this Windows 95 patch to works, but nothing helps, still getting that same memory error when i try to launch the game by clicking Dark.exe in that new folder.

Either those windowsd 95 patch files are corrupted or something else doesn't agree with my computer.

Also tried disabling ddraw and direct3d hardware acceleration, but that didn't help either.

So it seems win95 patch doesn't work for everyone, also i use Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 TI

Hope someone could help or i have to wait GOG to release better windows95 version
You might try going through thr install process a few times I got memory cannot be written error sometimes while other times no problem.

If something goes wrong use uninstall option in the win 95 patch and try again.

Doesn't help, seems i can't use win 95 patched game at all.

Hmm, it worked for me on a win7/64, but it took a few uninstall reinstalls.

Final question are you clicking on the 'dark.exe' in the dark folder or the 'dark.exe' in the GOG folder? The one in the dark folder was the one working for me. I think the one in the gog folder was leading to 'write to memory' errors.

I hope GOG can somehow merge the two folders, and make a complete installer that keeps everything in a single location (with the backup dosbox version for 'just in case').
I also tried that, installing with win95 patch, and uninstalling, for 8 times, but no luck, everytime got that darn memory error. Don't think i ever get win95 patch to work
I got the game working under this patch, launched into space... and now I get the same slowdown as the DoS version only all the time. At least its consistent now.
Is the ship speed at a consistent rate is the question?

It isn't supposed to be 'running' super fast.

The 'slower' speed may be the correct speed.
So any other help for getting this windows 95 patch to work ?

Since am i only one who could not play the game as win 95 version ?
Thanks, this worked for me.

I wish gog would update to this version instead. It's a bit of a pain to install but now working like it used to when I played it years ago.
In 'theory' what someone needs to do is find out what the patch ("Install.exe") actually does to the windows registry. Then it should be easy enough to create an alternate installation process that will changes the registry and link it to the same thread GOG installs the game, along with any related files.

That way a single installation could install the patch, and avoid the glitch clunky install process.

Can anyone confirm that the background music/ambience during planetside screens sounds 'strange' after the W95 patch? By no means a game-breaking issue, but it does get irritating after a while.
sndwv, what setting were you using in dos version of the game?

The windows version should probably be using general midi?
