Well, I've been playing Privateer 2 (windows version) on my Samsung NC110 - and it was great fun, until I hit disc 2 and it started randomly crashing :( I tried it on my desktop too, same problem. Guess I'll never finish it *sigh*

(incidentally it seemed to start doing this immediately after I rescued some lady pilot from pirates and she requested I go see her in a bar. Anyone else run into this?)

So now I'm thinking about getting the prequel from GOG. I'm aware that it uses dosbox, which can be quite taxing on netbooks (crusader: no remorse is a bit on the slow side, for example). Anyone tried Privateer on their netbook? I don't generally play oldschool games on my desktop so this is what'll swing the purchase for me.

If you have Win95 version then sorry... If you have DOS version you can do "a trick" (copy CDs to separate folders and change DosBox setting while game requires new one).

"Privateer 2: The Darkening" is not a sequel for "Wing Commander: Privateer"... so Priv1 isn't "prequel" for Priv2.

Works well on 4 year old Asus F3Sv (Intel T7300 2.0 GHz, Nvidia GF8600GS)... but I always disable "scaling" in driver settings.

EDIT: Sorry, I read "notEbook" but you have netbook. Well... ^_^

I'll see if I can run Privateer (1) well on my old netbook & let you know. Played Privateer 2 a long time ago & enjoyed it but I remember I was very disappointed that it didn't have any connection to 1 :)
Thanks z30, appreciate it.

Really wish I could figure out what's up with Privateer 2. Copied my save file onto my XP machine and it crashes in the same place. It's not during a disc change - always randomly during spaceflight, but I didn't happen once during disk one. Save file corruption perhaps?

It's funny, because it only started happening on disc two, it only happens in longer flights (10+ jumps). I still want to finish the game but I can't be bothered to restart if it's just gonna go crazy again. Funny thing is, I've tried it on XP and Win7 and compatibility modes just make it worse on both. Bloody Microsoft :(

then you were lucky i had that game the time it came out when i didnt had internet i guess maybe there were patches that helped the bugs or is it a vanilaa unpatched?

The Win95 version already has all the patches applied. Ironically I'd probably have no trouble with the DOS version these days, but getting hold of it is a pain. I actually swapped my DOS copy for the Windows one the year it was released. Bad move.

now you mention it forgot about that yeah the ine i had was the dox version oh the good old fm time.
Forget Netbook, if GOG had workarounds to get most of their games to work on iPad i would so get one.

If your iPad is "jailbroken" you can install a DOS emulator (the one on the official App Store got removed). I have no idea how good the performance is, however.

Windows 8 tablets will be available some time next year, so that's another option. :)
Playing space sims without a keyboard isn't fun... and to be honest i've never liked touch screens.

Netbook gaming FTW.

I was able to install Privateer #1 on my netbook (single core Atom CPU, about as slow as you can get) and it ran fine. Did a cargo run to Helen and ran into 2 Retros on the way and it took me around 15 minutes to get both - no slowdowns that I could notice.

Have 2 gig of RAM btw, memory might be a bigger factor than having an old Atom processor. the iPad's CPU is much faster than my netbook's - my iPod touch can run rings around my netbook & it has the same processor as the latest iPad.

Thanks for this mate, mine's a dual-core atom with 1gb ram, though i plan to upgrade to 2 anyway. Guess I'll get Privateer then - not had much luck getting similiar games to work and I need a good space rogue fix
