So I already own Wing Commander 3/4 thanks to GoG, but a major issue with the series is you basically /need/ a good joystick to play it, and the one I have just doesn't seem to configure very well with the games. Maybe it's because it's too new and these games are too old, I dun really know. I've also tried using a 360 controller as a gamepad, but like others I've had issues with that working as well. At this point I'm starting to wonder if I'd be better off just getting these games on the Playstation Network since the PSone versions of the games are on there.

So my question is which version of these games do you think is better? I know the PSone versions had some extra cutscenes put in there, since they had a couple extra years to transfer things, but really these being the kind of games that they are the most important thing is how they play. So do they play well on the Playstation, or would I be better off investing my time in just trying to tweek them here on my PC if I want the best possible experience control wise?
The PlayStation versions are not the same. They cut out some content, levels, choices. The replace some of the levels with cut scenes instead (this is not a good trade).

This GOG collection comes with the Playstation videos and other cutscenes as bonus content.

Keep that in mind you lose out by playing the Playstation versions over the pc. Because some branching plot is removed its a bit more linear, and you lose out still other scenes and cutscenes.

About the only thing good about the PSX version of WC3 is that it did have better compression on the videos they came out smoother. But some of the editing done to save space or fit within limitations of the system means you miss out on some scenes. There are only a couple of new original cutscenes added between certain characters (and the aforementioned scenes replacing levels). But these are included with the GOG collection as bonus downloads.

You would be more accurate to say WC3 for the PS1 has.. alternate content... videowise it actually has more than the PC version, but the ground missions are are replaced with alternates... The video quality is better than the PC version.

WC4 for ps1 is very abridged compared to the PC version and the video quality is worse than the PC version... but it's better suited for a controller since it's modified to work with the analog sticks and has rumble effects.

However you don't really need a joystick for either of the PC versions. Mouseflight takes some getting used to but it's not too bad once you do.
