Joystick is too sensitive

I have read a lot of complaints about the sensitivity of the joystick. I have tried editing the config files and changing the sensitivity from 100 to 1 made absolutely no difference. I noted that the settings referred to the mouse and I did not find anything specifically directed to the joystick sensitivity.

I have tried Thrustmaster basic joy stick and the Hotax X game controllers. I tried a couple others and they did not help. What am I overlooking? Is there any way to control sensitivity of the joystick in the config files? If so, what do I need to add (changing the sensitivity settings for mouse/joystick in the config files has no effect what-so-ever.)

I have been playing this game since the 1990s and I would really like to be able to track my targets. I fear that I will never finish this game until I can control the joystick. Also, Is there a joystick that has it's own settings, and capable of over-riding the DOS Box config files?

Thanks in advance for any additional insight.

Det_Bullock: Have you tried to see if you can set a curve with soem thrustmaster software?
The Thrustmaster joystick that I have does not have any special drivers. I checked and there is nothing. So, I have to use the basic Microsoft drivers.

I have ordered a new joystick with its' own drivers. Maybe there will be some help there. I only have this problem in a couple of the WCPrivateer games.

Hav you tried setting the joystick type to fcs like the other guy said?

Just for fun I installed Privateer and played with my Logitech wingman extreme with no issues (I didn’t even mess with the dosbox config, or the Logitech wingman software). My only suggestion would be to make sure the in game options are set to joystick and not mouse. I tried with mouse and keyboard, and I think that might be the hardest way to play, along with it exhibiting the behavior you described.
