I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (and I do have the Logitech Profiler installed) and I'm about to tackle the whole Wing Commander series. I know the early games only support a 2-axis, 2-button joystick so I'll obviously be looking to do some control mapping.

My question is simply: in your opinion, is it easier/better to do the mapping through the Logitech Profiler or through DosBox's control mapper?

Not necessarily; if you use Logitech Profiler to launch the game, the profile will be applied correctly.

Than care to explain please, from what I know dosbox is launched with a whole string of commandlines, I don't see how you can manage that in the profiler.

You can put the entire command-line in the profile properties. Just copy the whole thing from the shortcut created by the game installer.

It turns out I was wrong. I just did a quick test, and although you can launch the games from within the profiler software, the correct profile does not seem to get applied. It just seemed to work before because I forgot that the profiler was still set to auto-apply profiles, and I have never used the profiler for more than one DOSBox game at a time.

Still, with auto-application of profiles enabled, everything should still work just fine as long as each game has its own copy of the DOSBox executable (which is the default for GOG installs).

Ah yes I see, well then for GOG games it should be possible from what you described.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't mind manually activating the profile as I'm not using the joystick for anything else, and I'll only be playing one of the games at a time so it shouldn't be a big deal to just keep it active.

Quick question, if I map button 2 to a key in the Logitech Profiler, will it stop acting as normal button 2 in the game? Obviously I don't want it to act like normal button 2 in game, because I'll be mapping buttons for specific actions and don't need/want to do WC's built-in control combination that use button 2. E.g. I just want button 2 to launch a missile, I don't want it to perform the original actions of hold + move joystick to control throttle, roll, etc. How can I accomplish that?

Yes; the profile setting will completely override the default behaviour.

I too am about to begin playing through the Wing Commander series with my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and I would love to have some recommendations for setups of my flight stick for Wing Commander (beginning with WC1) I have not setup my controller before ether so I would appreciate any help you can give.

I set everything up in Logitech Profiler as suggested (didn't mess with DosBox mapper at all) and it's worked well. The Profiler app isn't quite as intuitive as it could be, but it only takes a few minutes to figure out.

Just look at the reference card for the game and then assign the joystick buttons to keyboard keys as desired. You can also assign the twist axis to function as keyboard keys for the roll.

Here's a tip on something that not easy to figure out: By default the sensitivity seems very high in game. E.g. even just a little movement of the stick will pitch/turn you pretty fast. To adjust that, in the Profiler select the X/Y-axis then Axis Properties. Lower the Range value, not Sensitivity (which seems more obvious, but doesn't do what you might think). I personally prefer 60%.
