I have been trying for the past few hours to configure this game to use a Roland MT-32 emulator, I can get it to work if I launch the game directly through dosbox, but when I try to reconfigure the GOG install, it won't stay. There are no other config files, other than "dosboxwaxworks.conf" and "dosboxwaxworks_single.conf". I have tried messing around with "dosboxwaxworks.conf" but don't know enough to try changing the other. I have successfully done this with Ultima Underworld and Wing Commander 1. I guess my problem is there seems to be no game .CFG file for the game like the others have. I hope someone has the knowledge to help me out. What I'd like to have is the ability to launch the game using the GOG shortcut but have it play the music through the Roland emulator.

Yes, I have seen this and it was very useful. My problem seems to be that when I run the setup.exe that is in the Waxworks folder, the music will change, untill I close it. When i do change the .conf file it is linking to doxbox, however the sound is still the same...

I may be late but have you considered using ScummVM?

I always play Waxworks with ScummVM and I use my MT-32 for music. It's a lot easier and ScummVM also has a couple of minor script-bugs fixed.
Unfortunately ScummVM still seems to have save game issues with the PC version of Waxworks.
Really? What issues? I've completed Waxworks multiple times and never had an issue.

Which ScummVM version did you use? and did you complete in one go? or load and save between sections?

I'm one of the ScummVM developers, who worked on that game engine. The last related bug fix was in 2011, and we had reports of save games still not tracking all progress in the PC version of Waxworks.

I usually use one of the daily builds.

No, I don't finish in one sitting. But I rarely go back to a previous savegame and I usually use just one (because I essentially know what I need to do) so maybe this is why I never encountered a bug.
Okay, I've experimented a bit with different savegames and you are right. I apologize for doubting you. :)

And, well, I'm also sorry for arguing and not actually answering you question.

I've edited WAX.BAT to have the following line:

runvga gamepc /4 /3

This starts Waxworks with MT-32 music and Soundblaster sound effects. Of course, you can also start the game with this line without using WAX.BAT.

I hope this helps.

Okay, so I actually got the solution to this problem! Keep in mind, you still need to follow the Munt setup tutorial to get the Roland audio all set up, from finding the MIDI ID to having the right ROM files for Munt (in this case, we're dealing with CM32L, not MT32.), so bear that in mind.

Now, go into "dosboxwaxworks.conf" and type in the MIDI ID number under midiconfig= (usually it's "1.").

After that, go to "dosboxwaxworks_single.conf" and you'll see a prompt at the end. You should have the ending prompt be

mount C ".."
c:
cls
runvga gamepc /4 /3
exit

The first value under "runvga gamepc" is your music driver. 1 is PC Speakers (I grew up with these, but they're not the best for the VGA games.), 2 is Adlib, 3 is for Sound Blaster Card, 5 is Thunder Board, and 4 is Roland.

Hope this helps! :D
