Hi, this is my first time playing through Wasteland so I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but at first in the game my characters would heal over time and heal when resting. It made things a lot cheaper than going to the doctor after every couple fights.

However, my characters no longer heal over time. Is there a limit to the amount of healing you can get from resting?

For a frame of reference I'm at Needles right not trying to solve the Bloodstaff murders. I've done Highpool, the Ag Center, the Mine, the Nomad Camp, and Quartz. Right now it's my 4 characters, Ace, Christina, and Ralf.

If I can't heal when resting it's going to make this game damn near impossible.

You should be able to heal while resting all the time. The time scale matters though, for example while in Needles time passes much more slowly than on the overland map, so you'll need to press ESC much more (or run a macro more times) to heal the same amount.
Even when I go into the deep desert and rest for hours I see no healing. I don't use macros but I found if I hold down on ESC it goes by super rapidly.

There must be a problem then. I've also found that my characters won't wake up out of unconsciousness on their own either. Healing can only be done by doctors at this point it seems.

uh... erh... uh... Resting? Is not "walking"? I mean, I don't press the esc key for resting... I just walk and walk and walk on the wasteland for my characteres begin to heal...

(And if there is a "Resting" I'm going to search for a strong wall for hit my head)

Edit

By the way... if the Maxcon is grey (not the usual black background) the characters are under a ill, until the medic don't remove it your character will not heal (you need to run a exam first)

Ooooooooooooooohhh.... THAT'S what that is. No wonder. Okay, that fixed it. Thanks. My characters all got radiation poisoning when I walked through Needles during the day. I didn't realize that would prevent them from healing.

Also, pressing ESC (at least on the Mac version) cause time to pass if you're on an empty square. So you don't need to walk around to heal, you can just find an empty space and hit ESC a lot and time will pass and you'll heal.

If all your characters have canteens you can do this in the deep desert where no enemies will crop up (as long as you are surrounded by deep desert).

Pressing the ESC key causes a short amount of time to pass. Time passes more quickly on the overland map. So keep pressing ESC (or just hold it down) to rest. There is a chance to be attacked by random encounters, the only way to avoid this is to go out into the desert where it's "VERY HOT", but make sure your Rangers all have canteens!

Actually, you can also avoid being attacked, I believe, by standing on top of a town on the world map.

With that said, the game should have really had a true rest option so we don't have to keep pressing ESC to heal.

(It's also worth noting; if a character is injured, letting time pass will actually make the character's condition worse, so you will want to try to heal the character first. Remember that you can keep trying if you fail, and that the Medic and Doctor skills can even be used during combat if needed.)
