I sometimes feel like I am the only one who either played the first Wasteland or did not love Fallout 2 as much as many other do. While Wasteland 1 inspired the Fallout series it was its own series with its own lore and play style. I find the amount of detail amazing and I have been lucky enough to run into a very small amount of bugs. This feels like a sequel to the first Wasteland instead of another Fallout game and I am glad they did that. Maybe I am not seeing something, who knows.
It's probably just because a lot more people played the Fallout games than played the first Wasteland. I'm included in that group, in fact, but I'm going to play the original Wasteland before I play Wasteland 2. I'm looking forward to it!

I do agree about Fallout 2 though, I preferred the first Fallout. But I liked Fallout 2 also.

Oh, I've also heard that the first Fallout game was basically supposed to be Wasteland 2 but they didn't have the rights to the name. I understand that it has its own distinct feel, but given that the original intention was to make it a Wasteland sequel, a lot of people assume they can just compare Wasteland 2 directly to the Fallout games.

I never knew Fallout 1 could have been Wasteland 2. Funny enough that maybe why I like Fallout1 over FO2. It trends a better balance between black humor and dark survival tones better IMO.
I just remember the glorious moment when I played Fallout Las Vegas the first time and stood before the statue of a NCR Ranger shaking the hand of a Nevada Desert Ranger. Finally, I'm home baby.

Yep. Fallout is the spiritual sequel to the original Wasteland. Guys at Interplay couldn't get the rights for Wasteland from EA and decided to make their own IP. Irony is that the game was so successful, many later players thought it invented post-apocalyptic RPG. I thought so too until several years ago.

There are in fact many nods to the Wasteland universe peppered in Fallout games. In Fallout New Vegas, there is a plaque commemorating Desert Rangers becoming part of the NCR Rangers.

Probably by age, is more easy to known a game that come middle 90's than 80's, by example I played first the Fallouts series, and only after the Wasteland kickstartes campaign played by first time the Wasteland 1 However, Wasteland 2, truly is a Wasteland game, not a Fallout, but this time very polished. If this has been Brian Fargo idea all thoses years, I can understand why he has so many problem. The game is good, but truly is old school (more than Fallout), for a business was very risky to do t he game.

For me is still funny how many quicksave slot were given this time plus the auto-save plus own save-slots. Almost as Brian was trying to avoid certain nightmares to return.

P.d. I loved Fallout 2 over Fallout 1, still I found very different Fallout than Wasteland

Love the three quick save idea I would love for that to be in more games.(I forgot you only had one save per character in the original game) I guess I see the appeal of both series and I was inching for a Wasteland 2 game after buying WL1 on GOG and really getting into the game. I am just confused on how it is not Fallout a negative I guess. I would love to see more games set in the Wasteland universe.

There's an inspirational bond between Fallout and Wasteland, of course they're not the same series, but a huge part of the drive behind the Wasteland 2 kickstart was a lot due to people wanting something akin to the Fallout 3 that never happened.

There is a lot of crossover between people who worked on Wasteland and Fallout, they are two faces of the same coin. As such, Fallout 2 and Wastland 2 are going to be compared. For better or worse.

but on Wasteland, the Vaults are destroyed! At least the one hidden in Los Angeles (I think that is a easter egg together some items very similar to Fallout series)

You're not the only one :). I love LOVE LOVE Wasteland, it's my favourite RPG of all time. Fallout was... meh, OK I guess, nothing too spectacular (my main complaints are: too much talking and not being party based - I hate NPCs). Fallout 2 I never completed, I quit part way into it because it was just more of the same.

Wasteland 2 I own (backed kickstarter) but have not played much yet, I'm waiting for all the bugs to be ironed out so I'll wait a while for it to be stabilised. The main reason I'm not more excited to get into it right away is that I'm worried it will be too much like Fallout and not enough like Wasteland :(. (When I backed it initially I had never even heard of Fallout!)

You shouldn't avoid playing on account of that. It's definitely Wasteland and not Fallout experience. And my memories of the first Wasteland are very fresh, since I played it recently. Didn't finish, though.

Preference between the two series mostly seems to be about who played what first. Fallout was my introduction into serious gaming back in 1997 and a game that fostered the love for cRPG in me. So it will always be the game in my eyes. That doesn't mean I'm not enjoying Wasteland 2. Game is a dream come true for any fan of post-apocalyptic RPG. Of course, it did force me to finally fire up Fallout: New Vegas and finish it. :) So I'm now playing W2 and F:NV side by side.

The bugs for me were so little, and the Wasteland 2 is another Wasteland, though there is more text (Well... now you don't has MB of HDD but TB and GB). and all the text is real. Nothing like a fake mission to mars

I am glad you feel the same! I agree with Revanbh you should jump in now. Honestly I do not know if I am lucky or not but the game is excellent. I have only run into 3 to 4 bugs in a period of 20+ hours of gameplay. Only one of those require a reload. Also do not worry it is a sequel to Wasteland 1 alright IMO. A good balance between dark survival tones and small amount of easter eggs and black humor. I loved FO1 because it had a balance between humor and survival. I for one am loving the NPCs in this game.

Except the game falls short of Wasteland 1 also. Maybe it's time to say Brian Fargo lost his touch. I mean when you use Microsoft .net to code your game it shows a massive lack of experience from your coders. Their choice of the nothing but buggy Unity engine also shows lack of any real insight. Sure it allows you to easily release games on multiple OSes, but the cost is stability. C++ allows exactly the same thing witth much less overhead but requires skilled programmers. So instead they opt for 3rd and 4th level lazy programming. The game is still poorly optimized after two major patches.

Wasteland 2 doesn't even live up to Kickstarter promises. Tactical team based RPG... Hah. More like an RPG with tactical after thoughts that they only added due to extra money they got after the kickstarter ended. Choices mattering also ended up being a huge bust. Thee Ag Center or Highpool decision could have spawned a bunch of missions to find alternate food or water sources. Instead you decide and move on never seeing anything real about it again until the final credit summary.

They got three times the money they said they needed for the game in the kickstarter plus another million or more after the kickstarter ended and the game feels like they ran out of money halfway through production. Brian Fargo shows once again that he can make good games, but without proper outside leadership he cannot get it done. I mean he ran Interplay into the ground and they had nothing but triple A titles. After my experiences with this kickstarter not delivering, a few others stealing from people by leaving games unfinished, and especially the Clang nightmare where they cancel the game and talk about a sequel that might deliver on the original kickstarter promises, I am done Kickstarting games.

Wasteland inspired Fallout when they lost the rights to Wasteland. More genius planning by Brian Fargo. The same can be said for Wasteland 2 being inspired by Fallout. The difference being that Fallout stood on it's own two feet and at Wasteland 2 is struggling to do that for all but the nostalgic players. Let's face it, the game play is dated and even then combat is worse then Fallout 1/2/Tactics and Wasteland at the time of release. It seems like they dragged out combat to inflate game play. Game play needs to evolve with the times. The story is good/great at times, but that alone cannot carry a unfinished, mediocre, and dated game.

TL;DR: Wasteland 2 feels unfinished and even takes steps backwards from Wasteland 1. The chat system still uses keywords and no speech trees but they give them all to you so it doesn't matter, much like the illusion of choice in the game. Don't set your ambitions so high when you don't have the time, money, or planning skills to get it done on at least the same level as Wasteland or Fallout 1/2.

I am only going to say I disagree with you on nearly everything you have written down. I will not go into why I do but sorry you felt that way.
