So far I like this new re-release, but I'm slightly disappointed that the new "HD" portraits aren't animated like the ones in the original were. It's a minor thing to be sure, but it added an extra something to a game where graphics were pretty sparse. Any chance that'll be addressed in a future update?

Yeah, they did. I hadn't actually noticed this until it was mentioned, though. I guess it's been a while since I played the original.

If you start the game and go to settings you can turn it off i think.

You can choose to use the original, low-res animated portraits or the new HD non-animated portraits.

It appears that the original game is emulated inside of a custom DOSBox that renders the new features over the top of the original game. This includes the paragraph book icons, paragraph popups, portraits, inXile opening credits, etc.

Personally I have had a hard time choosing between the two modes, and have been switching back and forth as I play. The animations and the new portraits each add character to the game in their own ways.

I don't see any option to turn on animations for the HD portraits. Can you tell me how you did this, or point me to the reference you used?

There isn't an "option" to do this. You would need to add custom portraits yourself in the portraits folder, and those can be animated.

Odd, I could have sworn there was an option in Settings to toggle portrait animation on and off in general. Been a while since I last attempted the game, though.
