I have checked and the problem is there in this new unpatched version.
So Is the problem JUST with the BattlecryIII.exe file itself ? Then just try the 103B version I made.

Thiev: Apparently the mod was used without the author's consent in the first place. We were contacted and asked to remove it from our build and we did just that.
Why was it used in the first place I don't know and neither would Judas, it was way before our time at GOG ;)
You can always install this unofficial patch on your own, though.

Petrell: It was used because the digital download version provided to GOG and other digital stores by developer/publisher was broken:

"The problem is that all random events in the game like spell chance critical hits...etc is broken. Nothing will happen unless it's 100% sure to happen. This makes most spells useless as well as all random items since all you get is a Ring of Elven Greed no matter how many chests you open."
avatar
Petrell: Originally GOG provided a link for the unofficial patch but soon decided to integrate it (other stores soon followed suit) because game was unplayable without it. Don't know why GOG did not try their own hand at cracking the CD version as the unofficial patch added quite few controversial changes mostly aimed to balancing the multiplayer. Perhaps they did not have experts for that back in 2009? I assume bug is not re-introduced now that game is unpached?
avatar
gscotti: When did you (you as in GOG) apply that unofficial patch?
avatar
Petrell: Back in 2009 soon after game's release.
avatar
duxcorvan: Great news, now games get "unactualized" to bring back bugs and remove features. You could at least stick a thread with a link to the patch site.
avatar
Petrell: GOG version (1.03.24) - Changelog (GOG only added the fix for invisible units)
Non GOG version (1.03.25) (requires the 1.03.2 version of the unofficial patch near the bottom of the page)
Ahatch's 1035 MOD
Thanks. Since I downloaded the installer sometimes in 2012, in theory, I should still have the unofficial patch with the added features, then.
Does this solve the crash-when-opening-spellbook bug ?

Very true, however when the original has serious, gameplay critical issues that may or may not be resolved with a little tinkering would you want to buy it in the first place? Yes, there are unofficial fixes for it out there... but it just doesn't feel right to package a game and dish it out knowing that it has these serious issues.

Now I know it's not GOG's fault for the game's mishaps on platforms it was not designed to run on, but then again GOG has spoiled us with all-in-one wonder-working packages in the past.

I think that the revert to the original 1.03 version is a good move in principle, but I would have expected this to be playable as well, without any third-party additions. Frankly, it's not. I hope they'll figure a way to address these issues in the GOG release as well.

Well, yes. It does work with 103B... at least the worst problems seem to be gone :). Thanks for sharing the magic.
At first this all seemed ridiculous to me, but thanks to this situation I became aware of more improvement over the unofficial 103b patch. This would be version 5 of his unofficial patch. (both the original 103b and version 5 patches are available) Edit: Based on a comment I read, on the downloads page, version 103b is bug fixes only, and Version 5 is bug fixes plus the extra content listed below. Hope this helps.

Download page:

I am not a purist. I am okay with unofficial patches that differ from the original artists visions if they make the game bigger and/or more fun. Anyone who wishes can get version 5 of his patch on the download page. Additions to Version 5 patch:
More Races
4 Playable Races added to the game with many new unit types.
- Ogres -Goblins -Dragons -Gnolls

Hero Options
These Hero options added to the game
- More Hero portraits
-More Hero Avatars
-More Hero Classes
-More Hero Skills
-More Spheres of magic
-More Hero Items

More Options
So many additional things
-More Feature Packs
-More Terrain sets
-Ships for all races
-New special building types
-More Lairs
-More units

If the creator sees this, I did I quick copy of features from your site. I hope you don't mind. I also saw him make a comment that he would look into what GOG was doing. Maybe they're already talking. Let's see how this all shakes out before jumping to judgement. My 2 cents anyway.

WinterSnowfall: On Win7 64-bit at least, without the unofficial patch in place the game has a problem with the random number generator that causes random map generator glitches, messes up the spell casting system (spells always fail because the spellcasting chance is always the same, apparently below the norm) and causes all sorts of other gameplay critical things (hit chances, accuracy etc) to freeze values.

I have checked and the problem is there in this new unpatched version.

It is utterly frustrating... are there any plans to make the game work out of the box on Win7 now that the unofficial patch is out of the question in the gog installer?
Well then, lucky us who still have the installer with the unofficial patch!
OK so I'm a bit confused, what patch should I install on the new WBC3 to get rid of the bugs?

Ahatch's version 1.03fix probably as it contains least changes and few people has said it does fix the random number generator bug. You can find the link here.

dirtyharry50: The creator of the unofficial patch is a dick for insisting it be removed and breaking the game for a bunch of people.

ahatchwbciii: I'm sorry you feel that way but the fact is I have provided a fix for this game on more than one occasion on these boards. You really should read before you post. Purchasing a game from a web store people want the Original game and add mods later.
My statement stands. I have read the post. It is my understanding the game is broken without the mod which I imagine is why it was added to the release by GOG in the first place. Normally, they do leave modding as an optional thing but apparently in this case it was deemed necessary to provide a working game.

You did not need to require that it be removed. End of story. I will absolutely agree however that they should have obtained your permission to use it before applying it and selling the game that way. Thus in my comment above I did not leave GOG blameless in this either.

That is very rude I must say , very rude. It just goes to show your lack of empathy for others.

Sorry if I was lacking empathy.

LOL, OK GOG, if you want to, delete my replies in this thread.

Why is it that so many modders are nothing but drama queen babies?

I'd be flattered, if GOG would use a mod i've made.

ahatchwbciii is a really good guy, who was getting a lot of abuse on this forum for exactly the reverse of this problem. The game had certain areas of instability that were attributed to his mod. GOG were dragging their feet and not addressing this, so I am guessing that he forced their hand (or that GOG finally acted). The situation now is the best of both worlds - you get to decide.

Please do read some of the more recent threads as he suggested, you are not fully aware of the situation.
