Huh? What about the critical bugs in last official patch that were the reason for unofficial patch in the first place?..

No more additional mines, non-existent pathfinding and less units? who wanted this to happen? i need to talk to that person!

Apparently the mod was used without the author's consent in the first place. We were contacted and asked to remove it from our build and we did just that.
Why was it used in the first place I don't know and neither would Judas, it was way before our time at GOG ;)
You can always install this unofficial patch on your own, though.

I just bought this today, and apparently the modder that made the patch GOG was using has fixed up a sweet fix for 1.03. Here's the link he posted: http://www.infinite-interactive.com/forum/showthread.php?426-103-B-Version. It works great for me Win7 64-bit run in XP SP3 compat mode.

When did you (you as in GOG) apply that unofficial patch?
Great news, now games get "unactualized" to bring back bugs and remove features. You could at least stick a thread with a link to the patch site.

It's literally the most up to date official version. You can apply the patch if you want. But this is literally the game in its purest shape, without outside modifications made to it.

It's a good thing. And you can still install the unofficial patch not made by the creators of the game.

It was used because the digital download version provided to GOG and other digital stores by developer/publisher was broken:

"The problem is that all random events in the game like spell chance critical hits...etc is broken. Nothing will happen unless it's 100% sure to happen. This makes most spells useless as well as all random items since all you get is a Ring of Elven Greed no matter how many chests you open."
Originally GOG provided a link for the unofficial patch but soon decided to integrate it (other stores soon followed suit) because game was unplayable without it. Don't know why GOG did not try their own hand at cracking the CD version as the unofficial patch added quite few controversial changes mostly aimed to balancing the multiplayer. Perhaps they did not have experts for that back in 2009? I assume bug is not re-introduced now that game is unpached?

Back in 2009 soon after game's release.

GOG version of unofficial patch (1.03.24) - Changelog (GOG only added the fix for invisible units)
Non GOG version of unofficial patch (1.03.25) (requires the 1.03.2 version of the unofficial patch near the bottom of the page)
Ahatch's version 1.03fix. (alternate download link)

Okay. So what I take away from this is ignore this "update" and keep the copy I already have downloaded that is patched and works properly. That works.

For anyone buying it going forward, they need to locate that unofficial patch and apply it so the game isn't broken.

The creator of the unofficial patch is a dick for insisting it be removed and breaking the game for a bunch of people. GOG were dicks for not getting their permission in the first place.

That's the real story here with no sugar coating.

They did get official approval but I assume that was from developer/publisher not the developer of the unofficial patch. And I'd wait confimation wether or not the random number generator bug was re-introduced or not before calling the new version broken. I also provided links to unofficial patches (both GOG and regular version) above should someone want or need them.

I'm sorry you feel that way but the fact is I have provided a fix for this game on more than one occasion on these boards. You really should read before you post. Purchasing a game from a web store people want the Original game and add mods later.

On Win7 64-bit at least, without the unofficial patch in place the game has a problem with the random number generator that causes random map generator glitches, messes up the spell casting system (spells always fail because the spellcasting chance is always the same, apparently below the norm) and causes all sorts of other gameplay critical things (hit chances, accuracy etc) to freeze values.

I have checked and the problem is there in this new unpatched version.

It is utterly frustrating... are there any plans to make the game work out of the box on Win7 now that the unofficial patch is out of the question in the gog installer?
