I have Warlords Battlecry 2 and 3, and have been meaning to try 3 as presumably the 'best' of the series, I see they just added 1, is there any good reason to get it?

Like with the Heroes of Might and Magic, 2 and 3 were good enough it's worth playing them over later versions - but 1 is not as good and can pretty much be ignored.

First things first. WBC2 is the best for gameplay. However it doesn't have a plot, and is basically just a load of battles. WBC3 has a story, but it's pretty basic, and they dumbed down the hero options.

WBC has fewer units, races, etc. However it does have a good story mode. I'd especially advise at least playing through the path of darkness.

So yes, get it for the story. Not that the story will change your life, but for that price it's worth it.
Just bought this yesterday. Love the game so far. Tried out the Editor and it is fantastic; one of the best editors I have ever used and it is ingame (not a seperate application). You can create your own map or change on of the ones provided (and save with a different name).
This game is so much like a Blizzard Warcraft game it is crazy great and just what I have been looking for after finishing HOMM 5 ... One of the best purchases I have made in awhile and though some say 2 and 3 are better ... 3 didn't hook me but this one did.

Love it

but like all loves ... downloading TORCHLIGHT 2 now ... :)

Having played the first one a while back, I skipped it this time to play the second one when I got an account on this site. The above statement is definitely accurate as far as I can tell.

From what I can remember of it, the story on the first one is way better than the campaign on the second one, which I am currently playing and it feels somewhat lacking. I'll get the first one eventually to play the campaign and relive some of those memories. I found it in an Office Depot for $5 or so and it was a great find back then.

Thanks a lot wpegg for your opinion. I was thinking whether I should get both or just the second one (I own the third already) and your recommendation made it clear ;) The only problem I have now is... so many games (after the Christmas sale) and not enough time to play them!

they all have advantages and drawbacks. my personal favorite is 2 and don't really care for 3. I like the races of 3 but I felt like my hero was too limited compared to 3. but on to your question.

the first one has a story mode that all and all is not half bad. the major draw back is you can only play as a human unless your playing a custom match. I though this was a silly oversight on their part but meh what can you do about it.

some of the things I miss about 1
a story mode
boats
and a 3rd type of quest giver.

some of the things I wish 1 had
a map mode like 2
titans I believe did not exist
the ability to play the base game as different races

all and all my recommendations is buy it when it comes on sale and enjoy then move on.
The Tears of Dawn campaign has a HUMAN hero as protagonist. It is not a bug, but intentional.
Basically;

WBC1: Storyline
WBC2: Hero Creation/Levelling
WBC3: Balancing (yeah sure WBC3's balancing wasn't great but WBC2's was probably worse)

I'd say they're all worth getting at some point as they've each got something good about them.
