Hi everyone! Sorry if this is a silly question, I know that the game has been updated to run on modern systems and OSes, but does it still come with a DOS compatible executable?

EDIT: Also, if the answer is no, are the save games in the same format as in the original, DOS version (can they be transferred between the DOS and the GOG version)?

These are DOS files (bin+cue based) that run through DOSBox.

PS. Warcraft 1

Warcraft 1 from gog is the DOS CD version v1.22h (the final official version), with bonus cd audio tracks on the iso image.

Warcraft 2 battle.net version is the Windows-only version afaik, just like it was back in the day. I too wanted a dos version (there are some drawbacks to the dos version vs battlenet, but it has a midi soundtrack instead of a low quality prerecorded tracks). There are mods/repacks to fix that issue of battlenet version.
However, if you are a purist or just want to play the dos version on an actual dos pc or through a dosbox, then you have to scour the archives for the dos version of Warcraft 2 and its expansion pack.

Thanks, guys! I thought it would be neat to have the DOS version because I have DOSBox running on my Android tablet (it seems to work quite well, actually, I was able to install Windows 3.1 on it).

No worries. I've also edited the post to make it clearer. I too would like to have the original DOS version of Warcraft 2 + expansion as an unsupported goodie/extra from gog themselves. Though right now after the delisting, it is rather unlikely to ever happen as I don't think that gog can offer these without explicit permission from Blizz... it was like that with Hellfire expansion for Diablo... Blizzard had to approve it first, and they don't seem to be in a mood for talk and goodwill in general.

Anyway, the dos version is out there, well preserved and archived!
You need PC I guess. There is possibility to take GAME folder and put into another DOS emulator. There is few ways to do that without installation on PCs. InnoExtract with -gog argument (refer to readme!). Or you can download Apple DosBox build of WC1 and extract the file. Using 7zip and WinRAR enough but in few steps, they not really good to extract MAC pkg fils directly. Maybe there is better extractor to do it.
On PC there is im sure. Many extractors.

But i doubt there is for Android.

once Mac pkg extracted there is many folders. More than on Win setup. first mac related, then DosBox and deep inside there is GAME folder you need to. Also in that folder there is bin+cue image as already mentioned above. Id remember maybe files are renamed to .gog+.cue. There is such GOGs relases. You need them too.

You can goes through installing process with image but easier is take GAME folder too. You still need mount the CD for videos and music (MIDI for DOS version of WC1).

You can see which files included in GOG-Galaxy build of Galaxy client on 3rd party GOGDB website.
