There is an option to do two players over LAN, but I'm not sure how exactly you're able to play multiplayer across two computers. I try to get them to connect, but neither Modem or Serial seems to get the two machines to talk to each other. Am I doing something wrong?

[SOURCE] Starting a multiplayer game

There are three ways to do a multiplayer game in Wacky Wheels. The easiest is to do a two player race, with both players using the same computer. If you want to connect two computers to play Wacky Wheels (the Comm-bat play option), you can connect the computers by using a phone line and modems, or by using a null-modem cable. There is no way to make Wacky Wheels work over an Internet connection or a LAN. Regular modem play requires the computers to be on separate phone lines. If the computers are in the same room, you can connect a null-modem cable to both of the computers’ COM ports. yea in the dosbox conf file

where it says serial=dummy

client:
make it so serial1=modem server:IP ADDRESS OF GUY HOSTING

server:
serial1=modem

serialX = device [parameter:value]

for nullmodem: server, rxdelay, txdelay, telnet, usedtr, transparent, port, inhsocket (all optional).

so

serial1=nullmodem server:ipaddress of server

while server just has

serial1=nullmodem

After checking with GOG support, it seems like their default configuration has you establishing a connection over port 5000. I took off the port they used so that DOSBOX uses the default. Then going into Serial Game, having the host play as player two by waiting for a call, then the client connects and uses the make call option, using the first Baud rate both machines were able to connect with each other.

This is pretty neat, I never got to see Wacky Wheels multiplayer work between two computers, it even has the option to play on separate screens or provide the splitscreen option, even if it seems somewhat redundant. Still cool to see.

Could you explain some more how you did this? I'm struggling to get a connection. in my game met setup is:

serial1 = nullmodem

the other computer is:

serial1 = nullmodem server:77.164.36.214

What do you mean with taking off port 5000? Could that be my problem?

Here's what I think you need to do. I should preface this by saying that I have 2 Macs and one PC, I also don't believe this settup procedure will work on the Mac as I see no multiplayer option show up when I start Wacky Wheels on my Mac. I also think this setup procedure may be new and may have been created since this post was originally created.

Procedure:

1. Go to your Wacky Wheels program group in Windows 10 and click on Multiplayer.
2. Decide who will be the client and who will be the host.
3. On the host computer, click on start host network game.
4. On the client side, select start client network game.
5. On the client's computer, enter the IP address of the host's computer, ask the host for their IP address.
6. At this point the game will start, both players need to go to the Comm-Bat option on the main menu.
7. I would think at this point it's probably easiest to select the serial port option, I would think the host should select make a connection and the client should select wait for connection. Both players should select the same baud rate and go from there. Sadly I have no way of testing this as I have access to only one PC running Windows 10, that being my laptop. Once I get a Windows desktop PC to replace my aging iMac, I can do more testing.

Trying it again years later, I had better luck taking off the port:5000 from the server config file "dosbox_wwheels_server.conf"

I assume if you were to connect to the host with their IP you would add port:5000 to the end of the IP address with GOG's custom multiplayer client launcher, but it worked without it.
