Santar: Yes there are updates coming to victor Vran, but the developers have never said anything about making treasure scrolls available offline in the future.

A lot of gog users seem to be confused when the developers said that the Gift of Gear item would be available offline, that is just the unlimited health potion.
The treasure scrolls are something completely different.

Thanks for clarifying. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but then the treasure scrolls are only part of multiplayer-mode. So where is the DRM effectively? Of course it's not good restricting this one to ONLINE-feature. But does this compromise the singleplayer-campaign or any other cooperation-mode when implemented? Note: I have not played the game yet, but I'm trying to get a clear picture of the concurrent state of the software.

Technically this isn't DRM, it's just locking away in game content behind online. (Which is just as bad)
The Treasure Scrolls are a infinite number of small quests that you can do alone or with friends, you just need to be logged in online to get them.
So if you play the game only offline you will never get any of those quests.
I find this extremely disappointing as the Treasure Scrolls sound like a fun addition to the game.

For splitscreen you could only grab one license and play with friends or family. Not the best but even good when the other player don't want to invest money or have some unsure reactions about it.

Although to the best of my knowledge GOG license works like so, you are allowed to install the product you purchase onto any computer you own, that means you can allow family and friends to enjoy the game also with 1 license (provided you have more than 1 computer).

Absolutely, so thanks for explaining and clarifying that point. From my understanding we should not stop here to complain about that feature. From the Q&A it seems that the developers are also willing to hear the feedback. Perhaps we could make something more from that. :-)

I absolutely agree. One big plus point of GOG is (or was in this case) that I don't need another account somewhere else to play.

Perhaps, although I would expect this to be a requirement when you sign up a game on gog.com, that might be the reason the manufacturer is forcing a cdkey activation online.
This is like complaining that a 90's game still has DRM because its online mode requires Gamespy, even though the DRM in the game's executable has been patched out and single player works fine.

The devs never programmed LAN support, so all online play requires an account. If you don't want to make an account, don't. The game itself doesn't stop you from playing offline. You need no account, and there are no install limits, CD checks, or online verification (i.e. No DRM)

As long as there are no drm-free multi-player options (either by setting up your own server, or direct ip connect, or lan) then it is a drm game, and should be removed from gogs store.
(((unless gog removes the multi-player tag from said store pages)))

Sadly, GOG thinks drm-free only applies to single player... yet 99% of gogs multiplayer games are indeed drm-free.

The only exceptions I know to this are these two games:
Age Of Wonders 3
Victor Vran

I can understand if there was both drm-free + DRM multiplayer options, in this case, I could understand drm for the stats/trouneyz/website integration/etc.

But these two companies are refusing to release the server side software, forcing us to drm to their servers, which at any point in time these servers can go offline, 100% making our "drm-free multiplayer" purchase worthless.


So as far as I can tell, gog is purposely miss leading and miss informing buyers of these two games by saying it is drm-free multi-player.
I tend to agree.. One of the biggest if not the ENTIRE desire for DRM free is the knowledge that years down the road you'll be able to play your game without any "issues"..

So because of that, No LAN in multiplayer aspects of games and requiring an online account or service to play without the capability of creating your own server IS indeed DRM.. There's no denying it, no counter arguing it.. None..

Its DRM..

ralfkorrek: I understand if people get angry by this "create a new account" thing - I was angry at first, too. But it is only needed for multiplayer and the gift-box (which contains things, which one can get ingame too - some of them really quick). If one is going with singleplayer only, there is no need for that account and no login at all - no DRM in that case.
Not sure if this is true. I use a "default deny" setup for Windows Firewall, and the game crashes if I don't punch a hole for it, even when I'm not trying to play online.

Even if it's just an edge case bug, the game is still dialing home on startup, before I've gone anywhere near the online menu.

Thanks for reporting this. This is important to me. Could you or someone else please confirm if this is still the case with the current version being sold?
