Can you play local co-op with 2 gamepads?

The game won't recognize the second controller for me, is it keyboard mouse only for one of the players?

Feels really sad if that's the case as the game plays infinitely better with a gamepad :/

Did you check in the controls what is the control scheme for player 1 and player 2? It's in the Options menu. Check it when you start playing the Local Coop because it would appear only then. There you can select which controller the players use and switch from the keyboard scheme.
