Hi everyone,

At first, I hope you will excuse my poor english as I'm french.

Here's my problem :

I've got the original Vampire The Mascarade Redemption game on CD's, and it was working very well on my Win 7 32 bits PC (I made a let's play of it from start to end without any crash) until few days ago when I decided to restart all the story again.

My game crashes at launch with a "Vampire.exe stop working, Windows is looking for a solution"...

I bought the GOG version and installed it.

And I have exactly the same problem, it crashes every time I launch it, few seconds after double-clicking the exe file.

I've tried all compatibility settings, administrator and differents users profiles, reinstalled directx components but nothing works.

Can you help me ?

Babibeli

Don't click directly on .exe. Use the shortcut.

Zanderat: Don't click directly on .exe. Use the shortcut.
It appears with both of them.

I really don't know what to do. All my drivers are up to date, other GOG games are working very well...

:/

Did you last play before last October, by chance?

My last record is dated the 7th of november, which is my very last play of the game but all the other videos are before november 2015 and I didn't play the game since then. Due to my poor internet connection, I didn't install all the Win update at the time they were out. There is always few days/weeks between the release and the installation for me.

Is there any hope ?

If that is the problem, Windows published two work arounds. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I got them - technical support from some game provided a link. I know my registry just needed a simple change, deleting a "1" and replacing it with a "4" to switch back on the targeted copy protection drive or whatever. The other way seemed more complicated but didn't require going into the registry.

EDIT: Try this: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/09/23/windows-update-disables-safedisc-drm-7-8-vista/

Thanks for your help. :)

I searched what type of Windows update it could be, and I found this one :
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086255

It's a matter of Safedisk and SecureROM, two protections for old games which are locked by a windows 7/8/10 update.

I think it's what your were speaking of, isn't it ? I will try this one and give my feedback here.

(sorry for the double-post)

So I uninstalled the famous Windows update KB3086255 but it didn't work. Then I disabled the driver service as said at the bottom of the page I linked. Nope, nothing changed.

I reinstalled the vanilla 2 CDs version, with the 1.1 patch and the changes made before on Windows 7 but no, always this message at the launch.

There must be a second Windows update that is blocking everything. I really don't know and I'm so frustrated.

I'm sure someone did have once the same problem, it can't just be me.

EDIT : I've installed the vanilla and the GOG version. Both have still the same problem. The GOG version is supposed to work on Win 7, isn't it ?

Yes, it is.
I have two solutions :

- reinstall Win 7 and all components and games
- install a crack in Vampire directory

I will choose the second solution and tell you if it works.

It's really upseting to have to install a crack whereas I have the original game on CDs...

And I'm very disappointed to have a GOG version which is not working at all.

Nobody told GOG about this issue before ?

EDIT : crack doesn't work. neither on vanilla nor on GOG version. If nobody find a solution, I give up.

The GOG version works with the latest Windows 7/9/10 updates without a need for a crack or something. Thousands of people are playing it just fine, the problem must be on your end! I can only suspect that the reason might be your French windows. Please try the French version of the UP 9.5 which has just been released!

Yes the problem is on my end but I just want to konw what it is and if someone else knows something about it.

The UP 9.5 is for Bloodlines, I play Redemption. =)

Mine worked with Win7/64 with Redemption but i used a mod forever and I'm not really sure what it does. I'm certainly not much help on technical aspects - perhaps try Planet Vampire?

Oops, I sometimes forget that this forum is for both games. So have you tried Age of Redemption from Planet Vampire yet? Chances are high it includes the fixed files to make it run after the DRM products have been disabled by MS...
Oh well, in fact it was sooo simple : I had to enable "Use hardware acceleration" in Direct draw that I disabled for another old game last october...

All this mess for... Nothng ! Sorry guys. -_-

But I'm so happy. ;)
