I installed the new version to the gog release. I seem to remember the unofficial patches letting you pick a background during character creation, is the patch not working correctly for me, or did they remove those?

This is a feature of the plus version of the patch, the GOG release only includes the basic version. You can always install the plus version on top though...

The histories are there, they are just turned off.
To enable the background histories: Go to the /Unoffical_Patch/cfg folder. Open user.cfg with a text editor and change vchar_edit_histories from a "0" to a "1" .

Something got messed up when I originally installed the patch, I ended up uninstalling the game, reinstalling the game and the patch and now everything works as it should....I blame the beer I was having when I got the game.. lol Thanks for your help guys.

Hahah, I was pretty wasted when I got the game. Had to have been even more by the time it downloaded/installed for the patch.
