I was trying to use a Logitech F310 Gamepad and that was worse than keyboard only.

It's been a while since I last played it (installing right now, though), and I remember having some trouble to begin with as well, but you get used to it. I never got very good at driving, though.

I didn't mind the keyboard controls. I did switch them around a bit and it works. The only problem I have is the fact you walk too fast

Well, archaic is a term that can be used to describe most games on GOG. :D

As far as I can tell the game only supports digital input (haven't tried gamepad yet but other users' statements suggest that it's still digital) so there's probably no way to activate mouse support and even any gamepad is as "good" as keyboard controls here.

This game is a really really bad port - I'm baffled to see it get such a high score on GOG. It was fresh at the time because it was trying something new but then GTA III came along and blasted it to bits. I mean, no mouse support is one thing but the camera is horrendous and very very frustrating considering the jumping bits. The driving bits are terrible as well - cars handle like bricks - and there's just so many poor design decisions. Ignoring the massively outdated graphics even at the time, the extremely limited view range while driving was a huge pain in the ass.

So yes, terrible port to a game that was pretty average even when it was released.

Stopped playing months ago due to very terrible control and ridiculous save system. Shame because the game itself is pretty decent. Badly need some mods.
