So I have the game, but it doesn't appear to work with any multi games. I'm guessing I'm missing a fan made patch or something? Can anyone point me to the right direction?

Which particular game are you talking about? Unreal, UT or UT2004?

UT2004 works flawlessly for me. Do you talk about UT99?

Knowing which game would be helpful but I'm going to assume UT99.
I find if you are stuck in spectator mode the easiest thing to do is install XConsole which allows you to easily switch between team and spectator really easily from the console screen (~) http://www.unrealadmin.org/forums/showthread.php?t=8179
