Apologies if this is a stupid question.

If I and a few friends get copies of UT99, will we be able to set up multiplayer games between us? Do we need any special software e.g. gameranger, hamatchi? Is it easy?
I've been spoiled by steam's friend system.

It is GOG.com, you don't need anything for running a game, or setting up any kind of server. All of the Unreal games comes with their own server files. Anyone easily can host from the in-game server option. While the more advanced users can use the dedicated server.

Of course you need to forward ports, and your router must allow the server. If you can't set up your router (or modem) you will need a VPN program.

As side note: Steam isn't support any kind multiplayer option other than its own servers. You can't play steam games in LAN option. The GOG.com isn't forced to use a 3rd party software, like the steam app.

Great, thanks. I wanted to avoid having to use steam, as I use it for aoe2 and the lag is horrible compared to Voobly

You're welcome. Yes, the steam is a horrible "platform". Basically it will not let you play on any kind of multiplayer without access to the steam.

My friend has steam, and UT2004 on it. Even with his superb net, it has heavy lag. I bought UT2004 from here, and I have no lag, no matter which server I choose.
Hi, where is the option in UT 99 to choose the Gog server in order to create a multiplayer game? I cannot find it. Thank you for your help.

Just pick "host server" from the options.
