quit and restart the game
that usually fixes it for me
Go to the system folder in your unreal folder and open the unreal.ini. Under [Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem] there is an option "UseFilter" write False instead of True. Worked for me. Hope it will work for you too ;-)

I tried that, but Unreal Gold still has very staticky music on Windows 7. Is there any other way to fix the sound issue? Might there a program to separately install OpenAL so Unreal Gold doesn't have to use the "GalaxyAudioSubsystem"?

I'm pretty sure the oldunreal 227i patch http://www.oldunreal.com/oldunrealpatches.html includes OpenAL (thats what I have set in my unreal.ini file) as fixing a huge amount of things and improving stuff. It really should always be installed unless your trying to run unreal on wine or something where you can run into problems.

Great. I had problems with the sound effects and speech but after applying your advice it now works fine! Thank you very much! I can now enjoy Unreal and relive my childhood!

Just wanted to say thanks, I'm playing through Return to Na Pali and ran into this problem.
