Unreal gold installed (twice with the same results). If I choose Direct 3D support I get as far as a window with very low resolution and an arrow cursor in the middle of it and...lock up (cntrl-alt-del, esc, alt-tab, window key, nothing but reboot gets you out).
If I choose 3dfx glide it starts in a very small window that I can expand but looks like it is using software rendering. Also none of the video controls seem to work in this mode (brightness etc.) And I do not have the advanced options menu option.
If I try software rendering I just get a black screen and a lock up.
Machine specs:
XP Home 5.1, build 2600
AMD 2.1 sempron
bfg 7800 gs (agp slot)
1 gig ram
abit nf7- s2g mainboard
on board sond
directX 9.0
1680x1050 resolution 32bit
I checked and did need a driver update for the gpu. I get the same results after the update.
This is so funny as I remember that my original version of unreal gave me fits getting it to run as well. Back then (12 years ago?) I was running twin 3dfx cards in sli mode.

DukeNico: Hello there

Hi
Let me add that since my first post I have fiddled a bit with the unreal.ini. I changed direct sound to false and changed the resolution and bits to match my monitor on full screen and windowed to 1024x768. Still freezing. I can't find safe mode in the gold package or I would try brining up one thing at a time until I find the problem.
I am considering just installing my original disk and all the updates to see if I have the same problems....could be an interesting experiment.
I just gave you the link for the Unreal Patches topic in my Helloes :) Try OMP-UGold.
Thanks DukeNico, I installed the original game from the cd and applied the 226 patch. this allowed me to get to safe mode. I found that by using software rendering and not starting in full screen that the game will work. Are you saying that the 227e patch will allow me to use d3d or glide?
And while I got you here, do you remember a mod for UT called oldschool that let you play unreal and the expansions from the updated engine in UT? If so, do you know where I could find a download of that?
Thank you again for your support.
I said "try OMP-UGOLD", as the topic refers to different patches.

Yep, this is listed here. Oldskool Amp'd.
super and thanks DukeNico. I tried the OMP-226 as that is what I am currently running (orig disk with 226 patch) and I still get a lock up when trying to use any form of hardware acceleration. It works fine with Direct sound and software drivers. I will keep messing around with it.
