I LOVED Unreal. Think it was one of the best shooters in it's days :D
I just wonder if the Unreal "Gold" Edition also has the addon "Return to NaPali" included :(

t0mme: Hey, I had the exact same question. I don't know where your quote came from, but the description of the game (the game's info page) doesn't say (at least I didn't see it):

This game has been patched to the latest official version: 226
Minimum system requirements: Windows XP or Windows Vista, 1 GHz Processor (1.4 GHz recommended), 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), Mouse, Keybord.

I came here to ask exactly the same question but found that RazielKanos had already done so.
Methinks that the game's info page should be amended. Meanwhile, I gotta get this one and blast aliens on that beautiful world!

It's weird that it's only 237 MB. My installed CD version is 560 MB :o

Where did you take that from? From the game page it says nothing about the Napali addon.
Just a word for GOG, I like what you are doing here and I think that is greats that you manged to get the "Unreals". I just think that 9.99 is a bit pricey for Unreal Gold, but that is my point of view.

I liked both Unreal and Unreal II. It's been awhile since I played them, But I remember Unreal as a tour de force and very original for its time. But I also greatly enjoyed Unreal II. Maybe even a little more, though not sure why. One thing I liked is that the Unreal games were not so insanely hard that I would get frustrated. I was always able to keep progressing and found the games really a lot of fun. At these prices, there's no reason not to play (or replay) both. Though I have both the original games, I may buy them again here just to support GOG, I like what they're doing so much. Getting quality DRM-free games with all the patches, add-ons, and extras is sweet! There are a lot of good games worthy of being "GOG'd" so I wish them much success.
Plus, if you're playing on a laptop (as I am), these games all run great!
(To those who think $9.99 is too much, yes, I know it's a bit since these were widely available in bargain bins years back. But think about it. GOG needs to pay their bills and make a living. $10 is not that much for the convenience offered, extras, this site and so on. Plus, we want them to succeed and make a lot of other good old games available, right? Think $5 for the game, $5 to support the idea of great quality DRM-free games!)
anyone who's played it recently care to comment on how it's aged?
I missed Unreal the first time around, and Id like to play it, if only for the sake of completeness. But i'm a little worried it won't have aged very well.
As far as i remember it was all about the graphics when it was released, without that WOW factor is it still fun to play?
Does it have any storyline or characters, or is it simply a Quake style blast through?
(really wish this would have been $5.99 - seems like it'd have been a more fitting price given the other prices on here (giants, shogo, UT2004) and i'd have been much more likely to just go for it without thinking... i'm cheap, i know...)
I had the unreal gold disk awhile back and it did, indeed, have the expansion pack included. Along with a nifty browser UI.

The GOG.com frontpage with the announcement of Unreal.

Yes it does.
All versions of Unreal Gold should come with Return to Na Pali. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be Unreal Gold. It's part of the package, along with the revised engine that seems to borrow a bit from the Unreal Tournament codebase (and unfortunately breaks online compatibility with the very first Unreal release, which doesn't have the UT/Windows-style ESC menu/interface).
Anyway, while the game technically wasn't all that impressive even when I first started playing it years back (not in 1998, mind you-more like 2002 or later), the scene you're presented with when exiting Vortex Rikers for the first time still has this breathtaking quality to it, among other things. There's still this sense of atmosphere that can be felt even in an age of shader effects out the wazoo. The basic gameplay is all right, though I'm still more preferential to FPSs that allow me more decisions to progress (such as another UnrealEngine1-based game we all know as Deus Ex).

I think Unreal is one of the best pure "Shoot things that come out at you" games. There is an atomosphere there that not many other games, even modern ones, have emulated well. One of the early scenes is when you are in a hallway walking along and suddenly you hear the doors slam shut behind you and in front of you. Then the lights start going off on either side of you in the hallway, until everything is dark.
Then something jumps out.
That was awesome. I thought it was great to see that in a pure shooter and can't wait to play this game again.
I loved the music on this game - every single level had a different piece of music from the tracker community, plus quite a few that were commissioned. If only they did things like that these days.
I remember the main criticism levelled at Unreal back in the day was its weedy weapon sound effects. I didn't really mind, but a later patch was introduced to give them more oomph. Mind you, this was back in the day when everyone argued that Doom's shottie was the benchmark weapon sound effect.

Oh yes, i remember that scence very well. I can see it in my mind, how it looked, and although i knew something had to happen when the lights went off, i was not ready for what came. Was really scary, like some other scenes. You always knew something is about to happen when everything was so silent and so, but you never knew what, and so you never where ready for what came.
And "something" is good. One of the first somewhat intelligent enemies. They actually dodged your attacks, that was and is impressive.
