I've been having a problem with Ultima Underworld 2 recently and was wondering if anyone may be able to help or has had a similar issue. Anytime I write on the map, or even sometimes when I just open the map, it erases all of my notes and resets the uncovered portions of your map (even the character location notes and uncovered portions of the map that start with the game on the first level in Castle Britannia). This would be annoying in and of itself, but after this happens I am then unable to save my game. It just says "save game failed" in red and doesn't save the file. Does anyone know if there is a Windows 7 compatibility problem or anything that would explain why this happening? Thanks for your help.

Make sure it's not a file access issue, by running the game as administrator (right-click it => Run as..) and don't install it into \Program Files folder, but a custom location like C:\GOG Games\

Compatibility shouldn't be a problem, as the game runs within DOSBox, but you can still try running it in Compatibility mode for Win XP. Right-click the game's shortcut, go to Properties and select the Compatibility tab. Set the mode there and tick the box to run the program as an administrator.

Thanks for your reply! I should have provided more information in my original post as I had tried reinstalling the game in a custom folder on the C: drive and tried running it both as an administrator and in compatibility mode. Still no luck. I also have a copy of the game from my original CD from back in the 90s and I tried running that copy in DOSBox independently of my GOG version and have the same issue with both copies of the game. I don't have this problem with UU1 or any other game that runs in DOSBox so it seems like there is something with my computer that is corrupting the save game process specifically in UU2.

GOG usually also suggests disabling UAC, when a file access issue is suspected. See here:

Also check if your Data Execution Prevention is set up properly:
1) Open Menu Start
2) Right click 'Computer' and click 'Properties'
3) Click 'Advanced system settings'
4) Open tab 'Advanced' and click 'Settings' in 'Performance' section
5) Open tab 'Data Execution Prevention'
6) Change DEP setting to the first option (Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only)
7) Confirm with OK.

Ah, anti-virus is the culprit, that's pretty likely. Thanks for the feedback.
