First, thanks for bringing this games to GOG!

I'm not sure, but I remember that Ultima Underworld 1 had some kind of bug that messes with things in your inventory when you reload the game, and made you reinstall and restart the game from 0. I think there even was some patch to solve it, that showed a in game message about an internal error on object list description.

Am I right? Is there any bug like that in GOG's version of Underwold?

Sorry to "resurrect" this post after all this years, but I can't find anything with the search option, so I would like to try asking again here, if anyone has finished the GoG version of Ultima Underworld 1 and can comment if there's or not any inventory bug.

It's a known bug in all versions of UW1 and IIRC is triggered when there are too many objects on the level. This can be avoided by keeping the number of objects down (don't toss everything loose on one floor), but it only causes outright game corruption in worst-case scenarios.

UW2 handles its object list differently and will prune excess objects so that the issue doesn't arise to begin with.

And you never need to reinstall the game because of that. Going back to an earlier save or starting the game anew will fix this problem.

Also try to avoid putting bags into bags. That can fuck things up, too.

Thank you, I'll try not to toss too much stuff in the same floor. I was wrong from the start, cause I always thought that the bug had something to do with putting too much containers inside other containers xD

I knew UW2 didn't have that bug, but didn't know why, thanks again.

Oh, yes - containers-in-containers is another potential source of trouble, although UW2 again seems to be unaffected by it (or at least more resistant to it).

UW2 handles the clutter problem by eliminating excess objects, which usually means that scenery items start to disappear as the number of loot drops, blood splats, and so on increases. This is most often visible in the Pits of Carnage level, where arena battles generate a lot of those things, and you can see various pre-placed bones and skull piles shrink or disappear as time goes on due to the pruning. UW1 either doesn't prune or doesn't prune aggressively enough to prevent problems.

I played through the GOG versions of the UU games a couple of years ago, and I had no problems whatsoever.

Right now I am on level 5. When I enter another level I have no problems but when I come back there I always get the "internal error, problem in object list" message. I tried to "clean up" the place by throwing bones and broken weapons into the lava pit with no success, and I also don't have containers inside other containers.
It seems that for now the bug does not change anything in what I am currently carrying, yet I wouldn't want to play this game for hours just to discover that I have lost a plot-related item near the end. No matter what I do, I will have to go back to the rpevious levels, so enethering the 5th several times is a must.
What I find strange is that in the levels above I have left MANY more objects but didn't experience this.
Is there a 100% working method to avoid this, or should I just continue playing while hoping nothing goes wrong?

I suspect you're in trouble; assuming you've been clearing each level as you go, you'll have to enter level 5 again at least once more (and probably several times more). Do you get the error regardless of whether you enter level 5 from level 4 or level 6?

One of my standard suggestions: contact support and let them know about the problem. Keep a copy of the save in case they want it. Who knows? With the save, maybe they can actually track down and fix the problem (though I wouldn't hold my breath).

Yes, I get the error both from level 4 and level 6.

Let's suppose I restart the game: would I be safe if I kept just the bare minimum number of items both in my inventory and on the ground? Is there the chance that the bug will appear even under those conditions? Would "cleaning" the floor by throwing things in the water (or lava) help?
I'm really liking the game and I certainly would prefer to finish it, yet I just don't have the time to keep on restarting until I have luck and miss the error!

Since I don't think that support could fix a notorious bug, I guess this may be the only solution.

Unless you can find someone good at reverse-engineering file formats who could write some kind of simple save file editor/unbotcher.

I think you may as well restart, then. You'll need to traverse through level 5 at least a few times more, in one method or another, in order to finish the game.

Honestly, I don't recall ever encountering what you describe, and I've played on and off (gog and non-gog versions) over a number of years. When I was young, I would stockpile pretty much everything I found on a level into an area I'd label a "storeroom" on that level, and occasionally move stuff to lower level store rooms as I advanced. More recently, I try to make a point of only carrying things that will be useful (helps that I know everything I'll need, and a number of things I'll want, already). So you shouldn't have to worry about throwing everything you don't want into the water. Did you spawn a lot of things (read, "food") with spells or anything? If not, I'd think a restart should cover you (perhaps a re-download and re-install just to be safe).

In my old copy of the game (not from GoG) I got the internal error message a lot, but it never actually caused an issue for me. I wouldn't restart unless something actually goes wrong. Just keep backup saves for each dungeon level.

I'd also say continue playing. There's a decent chance that you won't lose anything game critical.

That's the point; I didn't. Never spawned anything. I did the same you said, keeping a few "storerooms" (the one on level 2 being the biggest) , yet I added almost nothing to the other floors.
Level 5 is practically empty!

Also, I should specify this: I heard that this bug is game-breaking, so I stopped playing before things could get out of hand and asked for "preemptive" solutions.
After backing up the save files and playing for a while more, though, I noticed that aside from the message (which appears each time I pass on lv.5) nothing seems changed... since others arount the Internet said that for them things started to get messy immediately after the message and after reading GeistSR's post, I think I'll try to continue with this playthrough and see how it ends.
*Maybe* this is just a remnant of an already corrected error and I will get no serious problems. Knowing my luck I will probably miss a single artefact just near the end! :P
