Hi,

I have almost finished Ultima underworld 2 but have misplaced one of the gems to complete the big black rock gem. Does that matter to complete the game? I have given Nylus the spell bookend talked both Miranda and Nell but no new conversation happens with Nylus when I return to him. What have I done wrong?

Thanks,

Aaron

I'm pretty sure that yes, you need to complete the big black rock gem. Have you been to all of the worlds? If one face doesn't light while you watch it, then you're locked out of a world.

Yes, I have been to all the worlds and know which gem I have misplaced... Scintillus Academy. I can not remember where I put the gem after I completed that world and I know I didn't use it on the big gem because it is the only portal not lit up.

I did a little bit of searching but I didn't find anything. It looks like you're going to need to locate the gem, revert to a prior save where you know where it is, or restart. :-/

Have you double checked its starting location? Maybe you didn't pick it up yet?
a tool, maybe based in a web page so you could do it right in your web browser, to analyze an Underworld save file and tell where all items are located, might be useful.

Is there such tool available?

I am playing on Ubuntu using Lutris so not sure how I could?
I you do have a previous save with that specific gem, you can move over the character save file that has the gem to the save slot folder you're playing with, drop the gem to the ground, then restore the character save of that folder. You should be able to grab it from the ground and proceed. I recommend backing up all the saves in case something goes wrong.
i don't know whether i will be able to help, but would you be able to upload your current / most recent save file somewhere and put a link to it here?
come to think of it, a web browser based save editor could also be an easy way to work around or fix cases of the item overflow ("problem in object list") bug. ability to delete all items of a certain class or type like the blood stains or debris or whatever tends to build up and break the game.
I'm writing a library in c# to edit lev.ark as part of the work for my randomizer. For someone with the requisite knowledge, creating something like a blazor app to for the purpose you mentioned would be relatively straightforward.

There is this editor in C# (https://github.com/hankmorgan/Underworld-Editor) but it's configured for Windows only, but perhaps you could run it with Lutris or Wine. It can edit both savegames and you can explore the levels, but it'd be a bit complicated to find the gem itself in the levels, as you're going to need to scan for 1024 items in dozens of levels. I think there's a bug if you try to modify the levels and save them, for UW2. Also, you'd need to compile the editor itself. I can provide you with a compiled binary I made on my machine, but I can't guarantee any compatibility. Otherwise, you could provide a link to your savegame for us to analyze.
