Can someone tell me how they deal with the whirlpool in Ultima III? This is the first real computer game I played in my youth and I really want to enjoy it again. My problem is that the whirlpool moves so incredibly fast that I can't use a ship at all. If I lower the cycles enough in DOSBox to slow down the whirlpool the game is practically unplayable from lag.

My only solution so far is to play the game as is and manually adjust the cycles when I board a ship. But this is far from an ideal solution. Am I missing something? Can anyone else share a better solution. This is an all time great game that I'm dying to really enjoy again!

Have you tried playing with the U3 Upgrade? It adds a frame limiter that moves everything at a more manageable speed. The whirlpool is still a little tough to catch with fickle winds but not nearly as impossible.

Pix also included it in his Ultima Patcher for easier installation.
