... do you see the names of cities/castles/dungeons?

On the overland map, when I (l)ook at one, it just says Towne or Castle or Dungeon, no names at all. Inside the first city (I know it's the City of British) all I can find are 3 initials in the pond. Inside a dungeon, there's no name I can see at all.

What am I missing?
There is a map with the name of every city in the game, though it is actualy written in a runic scripture which you can decode thanks to the manual.
As far as I can tell, UIII came with a cloth map that was unmarked, no cities or dungeons etc shown. There were names of cities around the border, but that does not help to figure out which city you're at in the game.

So, there must be some in-game way to know what city or dungeon you're about to enter. I just can't figure out how.

Try talking to people in the town. One of them will probably say something about what city you are in. Especially if there is a guard or two near the town entrance.

I guess that makes sense. I wonder if I'm supposed to figure out which dungeon is which the same way, by getting clues from people in towns?

Near the entrance of each dungeon, there is at least one square (which appears as a ? if you P)eer into a gem) that will tell you the name of the dungeon. I believe that you can't avoid the square unless you use one of the ladder down spells (Wizard D or Cleric F) as soon as you enter the dungeon.

I'll look for that next time I try a dungeon then. Thanks for the tips everyone.
