i have been playing this game over and over again pretty regularly since it first came out and i stumbled upon something i had never seen before. i first read about it in the ultimacodex.com. there is a page that lists karma values for certain deeds and whatnot.

they mentioned that there is a scroll on the ground in the windmill in the well of souls. it will give you a karma credit if you drop the scroll into the water bucket in the windmill in paws. i just went back and sure enough, it's there and it gave me a karma boost.

there is no writing on the scroll--though if you click on it there is a little corner turned down in the upper left.

for the life of me, i can't figure out what this has to do with anything. i mean, everything else in the game has a purpose that can be explained and connected through regular gameplay.

i know this will sound silly but it is bugging me! does anyone have any further info on this item? how would your average player have been lead to this item and how would they know what to do with it?

have any of you all seen this?

I wouldn't overthink this. Ultima games are full of silly secrets that have no meaning.
Just developers being funny, giving themselves easy access to things while play-testing, or they're just curious if whatever thing they put in the game will ever be found.

more of EA's incomplete project no doubt! as the "invisible' bridge in the "Bloody Plains"(desert pateau area) near Wrong it leads nowhere and to a few joke items and a pittance of gold! it was probably meant for something but EA half-assed this game and was into bigger projects at the time of its making!
hey guys, i just stumbled upon an explanation for this!

i just went down into the well of souls and started talking to the spirits. this time, i had forgotten to go to the mathis mines beforehand and i wasn't getting the expected responses from him in the ghost tavern. he just kept telling me to go and see the village. i shrugged and walked away.

when i came up to the mill and looked at this scroll this time, it had writing on it!! it was a note from mathis' mother telling about the destruction of the village by goblins!! i picked it up and went back to the tavern and was able to tell him about it so he could ascend. i don't know if i will still get a karma boost at the mill in paws but i will go check.

in this scenario, the scroll eliminated the need to go all the way back to mathis' village to read his mother's diary. pretty sweet!!
