I'm just starting out, left LB's castle and working on exploring Britain.

I love that U9 has a grid scheme for inventory in backpacks and bags instead of just a big mess like U7 and U7.5. However it does seem like space is really at a premium, especially since items of the same type don't seem to stack.

I have two bags in my backback and that helps, but I'm guessing that I really need to find more bags, especially since I'm a mage and need to cart around reagents.

Does anyone know if there is a place to acquire (by any means necessary) bags in Britain? The supply merchant finally showed up at his shop but he doesn't sell bags.

Thanks much for any insight anyone has.

there is a fan made, economy patch that will make them buyable in outfitter shops but i think that technically that is cheating ;-)

have you visited despise yet? i know there are a couple there. there is also one in the castle on the bed that Lord British has set up for you. i will see if i can remember where some of the others are but they are definitely a finite resource. i don't want to divulge too much! you need to make sure that you really really really need the item that you want to carry around.

here's a nice bit if info--you can use your room in the castle to stash stuff that you won't need until later, like the runes and sigils--once you cleanse a shrine you can drop them off until the very end of the game. also, once you read a scroll/note/book you can drop it. no need to carry it around. try to bind spells as soon as you can so you don't take up valuable inventory space with reagents and scrolls and such.

also--there are hidden doors all over the place. you never know when you will stumble upon another bag or some good booty!!

Thank for the info!

I reread the Ultima 9 Spellbook, and it talks about the circles of magic being closed, only linear is open, and something about needing to unlock the ether. I get the impression that accessing magic other than linear spells is something that doesn't happen until later in the game.

Given that, I just stashed all my reagents and scrolls back at Lord British's castle figuring, I won't need them anyway until I can unlock the circles of magic and bind them (I figured out how to do that and was told by the pentagram that the circle needs to be unlocked).

That pretty much resolves my inventory problem for now. (I grabbed the bag Avatars bedroom too, thanks).

Question: am I on the right track here?

If the game is designed for gaining access to the magic circles to come later, I can roll with that, but I'd hate to make that assumption only to find later on that the means to unlock the circles was right under my nose early on and I missed it.

I'm guessing that I need to go to Cove or Moonglow to figure out the unlock the ether business, which seems to require sea travel (I heard a rumor about a ship captain in Britain but haven't found her). But, the game seems to be pushing me toward Paws or Despise right now.

Should I ignore Paws and Despise and try to get to Cove or Moonglow first? I'm trying to avoid spoilers but I'd hate to deny my mage character access to magic for half the game because I'm doing things in the wrong order.

Thanks much for any hints you can give :-)
you unlock a new circle of magic with each shrine that gets cleansed. if you are still in Britain there is someone you can talk to that will explain the process of binding spells to your spellbook. ask around and talk to everyone you meet. i won't divulge explicit spoilers unless you ask, i promise. :-)

there are a couple of things you can do while you are still in town that will give you some extra karma (which is needed for magic/mana) and some extra money (which is always handy!) try to resist buying weapons or armor. almost everything you could ever need can be found along the way for free, with only 1 exception that i can think of off the top of my head and even THAT isn't absolutely necessary for completing the game)

to answer your last question, no, you can't "skip ahead" too terribly much. it's one of the things i dislike about this particular game. the first shrine you have to cleanse is Compassion. if you have already cleared despise, then you should have met Raven on your way out. you will have to comply with her demands in order to travel about Brittannia. the next 2 shrine quests have to be done in their order of presentment--there is just no way around it. the next two pairs of shrines #4 & 5 and #6 & 7 can be swapped but only in their own grouping (i.e you can do #5 & then #4 and so on.) the last shrine always has to be last. it's just the way the game was written.

let me know if you need any more info! :-)

Ok, thanks for confirming I'm on the right track for magic! I actually just cleared despise today and met Raven, so I'm on track for cleansing the shrine soon.
