I have always had a particular curiosity about invincible NPCs and the more an NPCs seems invincible the more I try different things just to see if they really are.

In Ultima 7 Black Gate, the only way I could find to destroy Horance was by casting the Armagedon spell. It did this after completing the Skara Brae quest left it kind of unclear whether he was still a Lich or not. I didn't try this before completing the quest though I suspect it would have worked.

None of the following worked to destroy Horance before or after completing the Skara Brae quest:

*Full on attack with level 8 Avatar casting various high level spells, and party of 7 to join in the action.
*Two glass sword strikes
*A bunch of powder kegs

Has anyone found a way other than Armagedon to beat him?
After you capture the essence that corrupts Horance with the soul cage, and destroy it in the well of souls (and the well with it), whatever corrupted Horance is basically gone, so he's a good guy again.
I never found the need to try to beat him up further. :P
He's immune to other instant death effects as well, owing to his importance to a part of the main plot. As for whether he's still a lich, technically he is, because the black sword gives the same I-can't-kill-THAT! message you'd get from targeting liches. Armageddon works because it's understood that casting it is a failstate anyway.

...unless you wait until the final confrontation. Strangely, Batlin himself is susceptible to Armageddon only then.
I discovered a invisible potion inside Mordra’s house once. I think it’s on the shelf. When you drink it, it makes a spell effect and sound, but does nothing otherwise. I never found out if it actually does anything else, but you could try force-feeding it to him. :)

There's a cure potion (red), invisibility potion (black), and a 'mandrake root potion' (red/yellow), which does nothing except being used as a quest item to create the potion that's needed for the soul cage. Using that won't do anything on itself, aside from party members making remarks.
There's also an empty bottle, which also comes in use.

The invisibility potion sure does something. Did you try using it on your party members or yourself? You can also make enemies invisible with it, but that'd be very counterproductive. :)
It’s not a potion of invisibility, but an invisible potion. :)
If you are your party members drink it, it displays a special effect and makes a strange sound.

If you can point out where it is exactly, I'd love to know, but until that time I'm going to assume I'm being fooled. :P
IIRC it is on a shelf in her house. It has the same kind of transparent light grey effect as other “invisible” items. If anyone finds a use for it besides the visual effect and sound, I’d love to know.

Edit: My bad - I remember now. it is not in Mordra’s house. It is on the upper floor of the Dark Tower in Skara Brae, on the western side, on the lower part of the book shelf, at the bottom.

Interesting. I don't think I ever noticed that potion before. I've used Exult's editor to check out what it is and it's basically an invisible version of the mandrake root potion in Mordra's house. They share the same item number and frame, can't be wasted, and party members make the same remark when you try to use it.
Not sure why the devs thought it'd be a good idea to have an invisible backup of that potion, especially since the one in Mordra's house respawns anyway.

The Ultima 7 games hardly have any secrets for me anymore, so this was a surprise. Thanks!

Great to know! Those nights of waking up, bathed in sweat, fists clenched while screaming “what does it do?!” at the top of my lungs are behind me at last.

Screaming “why is it there?!” is going to feel so much better! :)
